OU football: Point, counterpoint

Is there reason to be concerned about the OU running game?

John Helsley: Loved the Sooner passing game last week. Took what the gambling Horned Frogs gave them. Couldn’t take anything in the running game, no matter how hard they tried. Twenty-five yards on 36 carries. Even if you take away the losses from sacks, the total only bumps to 61 yards. That won’t cut it next week in the Cotton Bowl.

John Rohde: That won’t happen next week in the Cotton Bowl. The Sooners sat on the ball last week against TCU. They still won convincingly against a solid team and no one got hurt. Survive and advance.

Helsley: Yeah, but it just wasn’t last week. The Sooners have been effective running the ball, but not dynamic. The time will come — against the Horns? — when they’ll need to lean on the running game, if not to win, to salt away a win. It better be there.

Rohde: It’s still there. It just went into temporary hibernation. Three lineman missed part of the TCU game. Certainly, you don’t doubt the ability of DeMarco Murray, Chris Brown or even Mossis Madu. Don’t start booing like some OU fans did last week when their teamwas on the cusp of becoming No. 1.

Helsley: No booing here. Just civilized debate. Still waiting for Murray to bust one, though, show the moves and the speed – the burst — that, yes, I know is there. Stoops says he’s healthy. Maybe, but he’s hesitant, too. I’m ready for a healthy long-distance romp. I bet Sooners coaches are, too.

Rohde: No argument here. Good to know you’re able to reach the No. 1 ranking and you have yet to bust loose on the ground.

I agree that OU sat on the ball against TCU. Of course, we dropped some passes that should have been caught that might have given us a first down and more time during drives to try to run. But might as well keep future opponents guessing.
