OU football recruit Justin Chaisson arrested on multiple charges

For the second year in a row, Oklahoma has to figure out what to do with an incoming recruit facing felony criminal charges.

Last spring, Josh Jarboe eventually made it to Norman after his two felony gun charges were pleaded down to misdemeanors, though Jarboe eventually was dismissed from the team after a YouTube video of him rapping about shooting people surfaced on the Internet.

This week, Las Vegas defensive end Justin Chaisson, who signed with the Sooners last month, was charged with multiple felonies that stem from an alleged attack he made on his ex-girlfriend last week.

Court information officer Michael Sommermeyer of the Clark County Courts said Chaisson was arrested and released Tuesday and was charged with four felony counts: coercion by force, assault with a deadly weapon, coercion with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment to avoid arrest.

Chaisson also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of false imprisonment and three counts of misdemeanor battery constituting domestic violence.

OU spokesman Kenny Mossman said school officials would not comment until they know more about the incident.

But under university policy, it’s unlikely that Chaisson would be able to keep his football scholarship while felony charges are pending.

He made his first court appearance Thursday. Sommermeyer said Chaisson is scheduled to return to court April 29 for a preliminary hearing.

"Certainly this is a difficult period of time for him and his family, and we intend to defend the charges and work toward a resolution," Chaisson’s lawyer, Michael Cristalli, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Spokesman Bill Cassell of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said the incident between Chaisson and his 17-year-old girlfriend began about 2 p.m. with an argument in the parking lot at Bishop Gorman High School, where both attend. After she left, Chaisson followed the girl to a coffee shop.

Outside the coffee shop, Cassell said, Chaisson grabbed the girl's arm and forced her into the back seat of his sport-utility vehicle.
