There's no doubt Dimitri Flowers has a competitive streak — especially when it comes to his father.
“I'd say I have the edge over my dad in speed, looks and athleticism,” Dimitri told the San Antonio Express-News late in his senior season.
Those are pretty boastful words when your father is Erik Flowers.
After making his way from junior college to Arizona State, Erik Flowers was taken 26th overall by the Buffalo Bills in the 2000 NFL Draft as a defensive end.
He played for parts of five seasons with the Bills, Texans and Rams.
Erik disputed his son's claims.
“I can't believe you'd write that down,” Erik told the paper. “Kids these days, they're delusional.”
Oklahoma hopes Dimitri is right.
The 6-foot-3, 219-pound Flowers is being looked upon as the next fullback/tight end for the Sooners, in the mold of J.D. Runnels, Trey Millard and Aaron Ripkowski.
“I talked to all of the offensive coaches and talked to coach (Bob) Stoops about what I would be doing and what not,” Flowers told Rivals.com when he committed to the Sooners in early November. “He sees me doing exactly what Trey Millard does. Maybe line up some more in the slot because of my route-running but for the most part that's what they want me to do.
“I see myself fitting into that exactly.”
The spot figures to be free after this season, since Ripkowski is a senior.
But Flowers expects to be one of the early contributors from the class, graduating early to join the Sooners for the spring semester.
“Right now, I'm going up there with the intention--I'm graduating early so I can play this year,” Flowers told Rivals. “If I have to redshirt I will, but I'm going to work and earn my spot and see as much playing time as I can.”
Even with Ripkowski, playing time could be available for the San Antonio Churchill product.
The Sooners regularly used Millard and Ripkowski together in several different combinations of tight end and fullback.
Flowers was committed to Boise State for more than five months before switchign his commitment following the Sooners' offer.
