NORMAN — One of Oklahoma's first commitments from its 2009 recruiting class won't be making it to Norman after all.
Defensive end Terry Franklin, out of Mansfield (Texas) Legacy High School, failed to qualify at OU and instead will be enrolling at Tyler (Texas) Junior College, his coach told The Oklahoman on Friday.
"It's too bad," said Legacy coach Chris Melson, who played quarterback at OU in the late 1980s to early 1990s. "He graduated, but his grades needed to be higher."
Franklin, who committed to OU last February, was seen as somewhat of a project because Legacy, a new school and a new football program, has been competing against junior-varsity opponents.
But at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds with great speed, Melson said the Sooner coaches liked Franklin's upside.
"He needs to go to Tyler and go get after it," Melson said. "Then, OU can recruit him again or someone else might."
Franklin is the only signee from the class of 2009 not enrolled at OU.
