NORMAN — Eleven people, not counting police officers and media members, showed up Friday at Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium to welcome the Oklahoma football team back from Miami.

The makeshift team of strangers was spirited, whether it was playing "Boomer Sooner” ringtones or clapping in unison for the Sooners when the eight-bus convoy finally arrived at 5 p.m.

"I just wanted to support the team and say win or lose, you play the game fair,” said Cayman Webster, 14, of Guthrie.

OU lost to Florida, 24-14, in the BCS National Championship Game on Thursday night.

OU offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said he appreciated everyone who came out. Wilson said "we respect those guys for being here.”

Lori McClure, a Norman resident who came because her 11-year-old son, Harrison McClure, is a big OU fan, said the gathering was actually larger than it was last year. The Sooners lost to West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl while Norman was still recovering from a major ice storm.

If you get rid of Stoops, you would surely have to get rid of Crack Brown before him.

I know that Texas leads the overall series against OU and I respect the heck out of Texas football, but how many BIG XII championships does Texas have since Stoops step foot in Oklahoma. Maybe 2 or so?
Brian, Bixby - Apr 16, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Just a thought.........but the eleven that did show up. Thank you and evidently you have lots of faith and enthusiasm for the next season. This is as it should be.

For some reason, though.......assuming the following folk were not enroute from Miami to Norman, I think you should be ashamed: various city officials of Norman......various students living in Norman.....various Chamber of Commerce officials .......owners/operators/managers of the many businesses (restaurants, motels/hotels/Campus Corner and other beneficiaries of weekend monies generated by OU home-game football masses), various faculty folk, other sporting athletes/other sporting coaches/ state senate-house members from Cleveland, McClain, Oklahoma counties ....State of Oklahoma officials (usually the recipients of OU tickets to games ), sponsors of radio/television folk (advertisers)/ Newspaper, radio, television folk (there had to have been at least 1 or possibly more to compose the story),...and the above listing is just the beginning of a much larger list of no-shows. To repeat: This listing does not cover folk enroute back from Miami.

lexington: I honestly did not know when they were returning. I guess I fault the media for that, and not getting the word out. We've got some spoiled fans, alright. OU played a good game and the players have every reason to be proud.

I love guys like James in Memphis. Hey James? Where should Texas Tech be ranked? They beat Texas. Hey James? Texas has the two most lopsided losses in the OU-Texas rivalry? Your thoughts? Hey James? The last 60 games between OU and Texas are an even match in victories? Any comment? Hey James. OU is so much smaller than Texas, and yet OU kicks Texas 50% of the time since WWII. Any idea why? Hey James, OU has won more National Championships than Texas has sniffed. Hey James? Still feel superior? Keep talkin' James. I like Texas fans like you.

Cathy, Cathy, Cathy, Please don't use excuses like the ref's. You guys go beat fair and square this year. I think this October could be ugly for OU (lots of talent leaving).
James, Memphis - Jan 11, 2009 at 5:50 pm
If I could have I would have been there but I live 3 hrs away. And although I live in Texas - Oklahoma is my home. Born and bred Okie and love my Sooners forever. I dont give up on my State Home or my State Team! OU is still the best. We may not have won the big game but we got there didnt we and how many wanted to and didnt. And Texas can squall and bawl all they want to but Oklahoma is still a better team I dont care if Texas did beat us this year. Look at the refs who was calling the game and go figure that one out. Looking forward to next year now and the SOONERS will dominate again! Go OU!

James-there is no reason to be so ugly. It is fans like you who give your team the reputation for poor sportsmanship. I live in the Austin area and don't run in to as many jerks as you with your trash talk. Lighten up-we all love our teams and there is no reason to be awful!

James, Memphis - Jan 11, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Let's also talk about the fact that OU is still out for winter break and will be until Jan. 20, the dorms aren't open and students aren't in Norman. I picked my family up at the airport today after their trip to Miami, and I have multiple friends who are still there, so none of them could go. I was working at 5 p.m., as I'm sure many others were. Let's not read so much into this. There will still be 13,000 people on the waiting list for OU season tickets this fall, and I suspect we will again sell out every game. Texas hasn't won any more national championships than OU this decade, they've only gone to one national championship, and they're waaay behind on Big Twelve Championships. So, I don't think there's really a lot of reason to talk smack, although idiocy is always an acceptable excuse.

Anybody want to talk about what Heisman winner Tebow did last year in his bowl game? Maybe he should have given his Heisman to Chad Henne. We played Florida without our superstar running back and DeMarcus Granger, one of our best defensive backs. I wonder how Florida would have done without Percy Harvin and a key player on defense. Obviously you have to play the game with the players you have, but that doesn't mean you're not comparing apples and oranges. OU lost by 10 points, not 50. And, I suspect if both teams played multiple times, especially if OU had a healthy DeMarco Murray and DeMarcus Granger, they'd probably just about split the victories. Florida scored less against OU than half the teams in the Big Twelve, which I found interesting. So much for the comments about OU's defense.

Almost a fan for every point ......sorry for the beatdown, Mr Bradford should hand over the Heisman to Tebow, would show some class. Putting up #'s in the Big 12 is kind of shallow.Bradford would maybe be the 4th best in the SEC. Oklahoma and Ohio St next year......if their is a God,would be the matchup, one could at least win BCS bowl game

If the Sooners end up in San Diego, perhaps they could stay at some of the timeshare condos Texas fans purchased years ago. I remember how Texas fans were running their mouth in mid 2006 about the Sooners ending up in San Diego or San Antonio - where did Texas play that year - the Alamo Bowl? Only at Texas are Holiday Bowl and Alamo Bowl trophies greater accomplishments than Big 12 titles.

The rally over Ohio State was so impressive that Utah and USC jumped Texas in the AP poll.

You guys get spanked every year in the big games (Remember Texas?) and continue to act like you are the best college football program to ever exist! What a joke!!! Stoops would never apologize for sneaking his way into the Big XII and BCS National Championship games when everyone knew they clearly didn't deserve the opportunity! Karma is a mean mfer and the Sooners got exactly what they deserved in that game! Teams like Texas and Florida exposed the Sooners as just another mediocre football team! And for the record, that's five Big XII titles not six because this year was absolutely not a legitimate game with the Horns being left out after beating both Big XII championship representatives!!! 3 Million dollar mistake!! BOB STOOPS his coaching skills aren't as good as they are in the regular season against good teams. He lost to Texas this year and was beaten again in the BCS game. Boise, Florida, Texas and let's not forget USC. Stoops' performance at Oklahoma has made him the frequent subject of head coach searches by several NFL teams as well as other college programs, which he has repeatedly turned away. He was reportedly the top-paid coach in Division 1-A football with annual compensation in excess of $3 million until Nick Saban was signed by the University of Alabama for $4 million per year beginning in 2007. However, Stoops will receive a "longevity bonus" of $3,000,000 at the end of the 2008 season (his 10th), making his annual salary in 2008 3 Million dollar mistake!! So much more pleasant in here not reading James. It's sad that he cannot see that the game was very evenly matched. The only reason Florida won instead of OU was red zone scoring. In the first half OU had their chances and Florida's defense came through. In the second half, Florida had their chances and did score. Game over. Yeah they didn't win, but they at least had a good shot, which the shorthorns didn't. Anyway Texsucks looked and played so poorly against a below average Ohio State team that it really felt more like a loss, nothing to hang your hat on and Florida was really the only team in the SEC that was worth a damn. OU could have won but it just didn't go their way this time but there will always be next year, always and if winning the championship were so easy to do then I'm sure the shorthorns would have more than 4 and more than OU, chump.

J, I think that the coaches were probably relieved that a whole bunch of fans didn't show up wanting them to explain " WHAT THE HECK WERE THOSE PLAYS IN THE RED ZONE ABOUT ? " I think the fans deserve an explaination from the coaches not an apology about why they did what they did. I don't blame the players for anything they did during the game. They played hard and represented OU and the State of Oklahoma. But I do want the coaches to explain themselves.

At age 80, I've seen many O.U. football games. I was so discouraged to once again see Okla. lose. Something is wrong with the offensive coach who sent the same play over & over again -- 3 times -- knowing the "brick wall" of the defenders. There were at least 4 times when Okla. should have easily scored, but whoever was calling the plays has sawdust for brains. The Sooner offense was up to the task, but with bad play-calling, dropping the ball, and stupid decisions -- the game was lost. The Sooner Defense gave it their all, and sacked Tebow the Terrible, time after time. All Florida had was their running quarterback, and No. 1, a running back, -- who kept leaving the field, injured, -- only to return 3 different times, leaping up & down..... (buying more time, among other things). Tebow's conduct on the field was unbecoming. Thank God our Sooners can hold their heads high and know they did a great job -- and should have won the game, having outplayed the Florida boys!!!

Maybe they can even create a new bowl, just for ou. We will play it in norman so ou will not have to worry about a neutral field. We will call it the sooner bowl, and ou can play cincinnati, so they won't have to worry about choking!!!

Is this article a joke? Eleven people. Wow that is a lot of support for a team that gave us a lot of memories and good memories this year. Eleven people well God bless them. If I were in Norman I would have been out there to say thank you for the victories and a great game in Miami. Eleven people, I just cannot believe the Sooner fans are so fickle and do not support our team even in defeat. The team did not let us down. If anyone did it was the coaches and their decisions Thursday night. No passes during the first time at the goal line? Not going for a field goal and getting the lead at the end of the half? The field goal try at extremely long range? Second guessing the coaches is not right but these decisions are highly questionable. However, the defense really played well against a very good team and offense gave it their best shot. Now no one wants to support them. Terrible.

Tebow Skips Senior Season, Ascends Directly Into Heaven

MIAMI (SP) -- Shortly after leading the Florida Gators to a national
championship with a 24-14 win over Oklahoma, junior quarterback Tim
Tebow announced that he would skip his senior season and ascend
directly into heaven.

Tebow entered the press room to wild applause. A reporter for a 24-
hour cable sports network burst into tears when the 2007 Heisman
winner entered the room. Another threw a pair of boxer shorts on the
podium. Tebow smiled at the gesture and several sports reporters
fainted.

"Sorry I'm late," Tebow began. "There was a six-year-old boy with
cancer in row 54 and I had to make my way through the crowd to heal
him."

"I want to start by saying that playing quarterback for the University
of Florida, winning two national championships, has been a great
honor. There has been some speculation about my future and I want to
clear that up right now," he continued.

"Don't go, Tim!" a reporter shouted from the back of the room.

"After much consideration, I have decided to skip my senior season at
the University of Florida and ascend directly into Heaven," Tebow
announced. Upon making the announcement, Tebow was bathed in a
blinding white light and vanished.

In response to the news, ESPN announced they will have a month-long
tribute to Tebow. ESPN2 will now be known as ESPN-TEBOW and will
feature Tebow highlights (including home videos of Tebow's childhood),
re-airings of past interviews, Tebow-centric analysis by ESPN air
personalities, a Tebow quiz show and a reality show to find the "most
Tebow-like" person in America.

"He wasn't just the greatest player in college football history," said
a college football writer at the press conference, tears streaming
down his face. "He might have been the greatest person to ever walk on
earth."

Yep, they didn't show up for work on Friday either. Bahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okiechokie, Chokelahoma City - Jan 10, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Every morning I wake up in my Ski Island home. I go out, get into my car, and get onto Macarthur. A lot of times I stop at the 7-11 on Macarthur (just south of the Britton light on the east side of the road) and get a cup of coffee, then I continue on to NW Expressway, head down 74, and take the cross-town (I-40) to downtown. I go into my work area and listen to all the OU fans talk about how they are so great, and how they were going to whip Florida 62-24. Friday was great. A lot of people called in sick!!! Monday is going to be even better!!! Bahahahahahahaha!!!
Okiechokie, Chokelahoma City - Jan 10, 2009 at 2:59 pm
True Sooner fans still love the Sooners. If you are Sooner born, and Sooner bred then you will continue to be until you are Sooner dead! I am proud to be a Sooner and I am proud of those boys. See you next season! BOOMER SOONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kristin, Bentonville - Jan 10, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Shame Shame Those of us stuck out here in the world (Plattsmouth Nebraska YUCH) would have loved to be there to greet the boys back. I guess that a 12 win season another Big 12 Championship and the privledge of supporting the greatest college football program on the planet is not enough. I know the BCS BUGABOO is on everyone's mind who follows Oklahoma, but we will get it right believe me. The media will grab on to anything and everything negative so let's show the world what OU is made of.
KEEP the FAITH.

I think that the coaches were probably relieved that a whole bunch of fans didn't show up wanting them to explain " WHAT THE HECK WERE THOSE PLAYS IN THE RED ZONE THE RED ZONE ABOUT ? " I think they deserve an explaination from them not an apology about why they did what they did. I don't blame the players for anything they did during the game. But I do want the coaches to explain themselves.

Tom is spot on. I'll tell you why. I moved here in 1990 and couldn't give a rats arshe about football. But, over time and listening to my OU friends, I got hooked on OU during the 2000 championship run. But, from that point on, I EXPECTED OU to win. I was then a "fair weather" fan. Praise them when they win and cuss them when they lost ANY game. It's taken me time to learn that you can't expect it all the time and I've since loss my demeanor of emotions if the win or lose. Will always be OU fan regardless.
Scott, Chickasha - Jan 10, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Great season, Sooners. There's nothing to be ashamed of. The 2008 season is over and it's time to rest up and get on with college life.

Paula, go right on believing everything you read in the NYT and you will go far, LOL. I guess you failed to read follow ups where he admitted that the paper was exaggerated and that no UT staff or players were even present. Get REAL.

I guess you expect us to believe the mother's story about her telling Brown that other teams were offering monetary gifts and basically appeared with her hand out. Everyone jumps on fiction without waiting for the truth to come out and why not have the NCAA investigate if they believe any of the 'stories'. If you're going to believe the NYT, please make sure the writer isn't a homer.

Okiechokie, Chokelahoma City - Jan 10, 2009 at 10:49 am
This 11 people thing is overblown, it wasn't highly publicized when they were getting back and it was 5 on a Friday afternoon! Most people were either at work or just getting off work, so the fact that people didn't come out in droves isn't a huge surprise.
Billy, Oklahoma City - Jan 10, 2009 at 10:42 am
Again, I want to thank Coach Stoops the rest of the staff and the players for a great season. Just like coach Stoops said after the game, "We'll try and get there next year and every year after." Something like that, anyway. Woe to those who think OU will never win another big game. It will happen and it will happen under Coach Stoops's watch. BOOMER SOONER!!!!

Far from a fair weather fan here. Been a a Sooner fan 48 years now and will continue to be. Just was pointing out an area where I think the coaching staff needs to get better at. In the times that Oklahoma gets behind in big games the Offensive staff seems to lose focus and that causes errors like we saw in the game. The additional time it was taking for Oklahoma to snap the ball in the 2nd half gave Florida an advantage. When Oklahoma did get the ball snapped quickly they were successful at gashing the Florida defense. That is my point.
jerry, Hephzibah - Jan 10, 2009 at 9:43 am

Wow, 11 people...it would have been better if no one showed up.

I would agree that as Sooner fans we tend to be a bit spoiled. We quickly forget sitting through Blake/Schnellenberger era where any bowl game was a pipe dream. Unlike the USC game, this team didn't lay an egg - they played well against great team who took advantage of their opportunities when OU didn't.

I know everyone is disappointed, but this is a great program and Stoops will undoubtedly win another title. I'm sure it hurts everyone in the program to have to go through another year of 0 for BCS bowl talk. You would hope the fans near Norman would have been a bit more supportive.

Hopefully Coach Stoops and Coach Wilson took some mental notes with them from this game about scheming certain plays against teams that have really good defenses like the Florida Gators have. Those 2 series of plays deep inside the red zone and they do not come away with any points were the big turning points of the game in my mind. They gave momentum and energy to Florida at a point in the game where Oklahoma was in the position to seize control of the game.
Another thing that helped the Florida defense was the Sooner coaching staff indecisiveness on plays caused the offense to take too long to get plays off at key times during the game. This allowed Florida to reposition their defensive players to be in a better position to disrupt plays like we saw down in the red zone. I am still a Sooner fan and always will be.
jerry, Hephzibah - Jan 10, 2009 at 9:02 am
J,Austin what's up? Don't think you have to much to crow about. Your team had to come from behind to beat a very subpar Ohio State in the last second. Have you not read the articles about how the BCS got it right and you guys should have been where you were because you SUCK! If it wasn't for your coach CRY DADDY MACK you might have not even made it there. You guys really need to take up a collection and get Mack some counciling for his emotional problems instead of whining and dining, oh yeah and providing drugs and topless girls to your high school recruits. I believe that is againt the law, or maybe Texas has a whole different set of laws! Just read the New York times anyone if you have not read it yet. Better get your ducks in a row for the investigation that is soon to follow. You guys classless and would stoop to anything from crying to breaking the law! You would do well to mind your own backyard before you come on here and talk about some else!

BOOMER SOONER!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hold your heads up high and get ready for next year. Many teams would have loved to be in our position. To bad I live in Arkansas because you can bet that I would have been there to welcome them home. Heck, if I had know I would have probably drove all the way 7 hrs to welcome them back. You guys should be ashamed of yourself. And the media makes me sick. Bradford is an awesome individual and no one should try to take away what he as accomplished this or last year. The media acts like Tebow walks on water. We'll he better if he goes to the NFL or he'll be meeting Jesus sooner than he thinks. He's to slow and the NFL guys will kill him. Better loose some of that baby fat his momma has kept on him while home schooling him LOL! I love the SOONERS and BIG GAME BOB, at least he gets us there and he didn't have to cry and whine like somebody I know south of us to get there!

As an OU grad and Native Okahoman, what do you expect? After 5 straight bowl losses, 3 for the NC, I have lost faith in our teams toughness in big games. Yes we rule the B12, but that league now is suspect, but on the national stage we fail to show up, period.

I have been an avid fan of The University of Oklahoma Sooner sports program for over 50 years;without ever having had the chance of ever stepping upon the campus as either a growing youngster to witness " our heroes " on their field of blood and honor or,as even a Texas high-school dropout trying to find my way through the impassioned years which was the Vietnam-era conflict. Yet,eventhough I don't to this day have what you Okies would call a formal education. I do know why there were ONLY eleven rowdy thankful fans greeting Coach Bob Stoops, his coaches and the 2008-09 version of our Oklahoma Sooners as they proudly stepped off the buses. A blind person could spot it in a minute: " everyone who supports the crimson and cream ARE spoiled to the max by success." And,when our Sooners do not add to OU's past history of winning; we the fans stupidly "punish" our team ! I remember being at a game in Boulder with my Dad when I was five;listening to a radio announcer on a Colorado station answering a telephone caller's inquiry about the score between Oklahoma and the Golden Buffaloes. And,the radio announcer telling the caller the score was something like 45 to 0 late in the 4th quarter. The caller's
retort was," Is that all !" And,do you know what the announcer's reply was? He laughingly replied;" How much rice can a China-man eat?"
I say again; " WE are spoiled rice eaters who can not accept losing as well as winning. And,until we ALL gather together as a Sooner nation to welcome back our blooded but never stopped gridiron heroes;WE don't deserve another National Championship, period."
