Brannon Green's nickname seems custom-made for a tight end or fullback.

But for “Moose” the name came before Green started his path toward football.

“I've had that nickname since I was 2 years old,” said Green, the newest Oklahoma football signee. “My grandpa started calling me ‘Moose' and then everybody else just started calling me the same thing.”

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound tight end from southeast Kansas signed with the Sooners on Wednesday morning.

“It's a great feeling,” Green said. “Now, it's time to go to work and get up there and become a Sooner.”

He’ll start at OU in January and go through spring practice with the Sooners.

Green drew looks from Kansas, Kansas State and Tulsa out of high school and even received an offer from the Jayhawks before Mark Mangino's departure changed things.

“It worked out even better than I'd planned on,” Green said.

At Fort Scott Community College, Green has put on about 25 pounds — “good weight” he says.

“I've been lifting real hard and eating right and kind of transformed my body a little bit,” Green said. “My time there got me prepared to be able to play at OU.”

With no scholarship tight ends returning next season for the Sooners, it's become a recent priority.

Green hopes that translates into fast playing time.
