OU football: Sooners turn to Brennan Clay, Damien Williams after passing game falters

NORMAN — When Oklahoma had the ball in the second half, there was very little doubt who was getting the ball — at least if the Sooners had any hope of moving the ball.

But still, Brennan Clay and Damien Williams found space to run.

Clay and Williams combined for 265 of Oklahoma's 435 yards of total offense in Oklahoma's 16-7 win over West Virginia on Saturday night on Owen Field.

“It's a great feeling,” Sooners fullback Trey Millard said. “When you can line up and the team knows what you're going to do and you still just run the ball.”

Millard only got one carry on the ground but scored Oklahoma's only touchdown on a 1-yard reception.

Through two games, the Sooners have run for 621 yards.

“I didn't think we were going to run the ball like this,” Williams said. “I think they tried to adjust to it, we just adjusted to them too.”

The last time the Sooners rushed for 300 or more yards back to back was in 1997, when they did it against Texas and Baylor.

“You may get used to it,” Sooners coach Bob Stoops said of the big rushing numbers. “I still believe we're going to throw it better than we have, but we can run the football like that.”

The Sooners attempted just six passes in the second half, completing just one with a pair of interceptions.

On OU's second drive of the second half, Williams had two carries for a combined 17 yards to start the drive before Clay broke off a 34-yard run followed by a 26-yard run.

“As a running back, I'm loving it,” Clay said. “I think we need to be more balanced offensively though.”
