— Bob Stoops says Trevor Knight isn’t the man yet.

Knight’s teammates, though, say otherwise.

“He’s the guy now,” tight end Trevor McNamara said. “Everybody knows it. He knows it. He’s doing a great job of taking that leadership role and running with it. He has everybody’s respect in the locker room. He’s the guy we look to.”

While the Sugar Bowl defined Knight’s on-the-field success last year, a moment much earlier in the season set the stage for teammates to talk about Knight the way McNamara did.

Knight started against West Virginia and struggled. He threw for just 119 yards, throwing a pair of third-quarter interceptions before being injured and giving way to Blake Bell.

Bell went on to lead the Sooners to a 16-7 win.

After Bell finished speaking with the media, Knight came over to Bell’s locker and embraced the player who just unseated him as OU’s quarterback.

No matter how things are going for him personally or how things are going for the team, Knight’s demeanor stays the same — positive and supportive.

Running back Keith Ford has been around Knight a lot over the last 15 months. He’s yet to see Knight yell out of frustration.

“If you’re asking me if I’ve ever seen him get angry, not at all,” Ford said. “He’s just a leader. He leads his team and that’s what quarterbacks do.

“He’s a very good person. I’ve never seen him angry. I don’t know if he has that side or if he has it in him.”
