OU Insider: Bob Stoops to Notre Dame?

NORMAN — Oklahoma fans didn’t get to enjoy the school’s biggest win of the season for very long Saturday.

While the Sooners were finishing off a 27-0 pounding of Oklahoma State, a pregame broadcast report speculated Bob Stoops would be on his way to South Bend as early as Sunday.

"We haven’t talked to anybody, we haven’t authorized anybody to talk to anybody,” Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick told the Chicago Tribune in response to the report as the Fighting Irish were preparing to play presumably their last game with Charlie Weis as coach Saturday night in Palo Alto.

"You don’t have to ask me about A, B, C or D — not one of them is true.”

Stoops flying to interview for a job not even yet vacant seemed preposterous.

In addition, his 104-year-old grandmother passed away Saturday, and her funeral is Tuesday morning in Stoops’ hometown of Youngstown, Ohio.

That makes the rumor about Stoops’ alleged flight to South Bend seem even more preposterous.

But insiders in South Bend suggest Swarbrick making a strong push to swipe Stoops from OU is not.

Weis is expected to be fired, perhaps as soon as today. And Swarbrick is under enormous pressure to hit a home run with this next hire. Stoops would constitute a home run.
