Share “OU insider: Receiver Trey Metoyer sees...”

By Jake Trotter Published: May 24, 2010
Over the last three years, Oklahoma has just missed out on signing big-time wide receivers Julio Jones, Rueben Randle and Darius White.

But this recruiting class, the Sooners already have secured a verbal commitment from one of the top wideouts from the Class of 2011 in Trey Metoyer.

The Whitehouse, Texas, native is ranked the No. 4 wide receiver nationally by, and the No. 7 wide receiver nationally by Tom Lemming.

Metoyer, who already has a pair of 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his prep career, spoke with The Oklahoman about what drew him to OU, why it’s important for a receiver to have swagger and what other receivers he looks up to:

Why did you decide to commit to OU?

"Their offense, it fits me perfectly. It’s the best decision I could have made. People have been telling me that ever since I committed.”

What do you mean when you say, ‘their offense fits me perfectly?’

"The spread. Also, I see the receivers in and who’s coming out. I feel I have a good chance of coming in and playing.”

What do you think of Jay Norvell (OU’s wide receivers coach)?

"He’s real cool, a real cool guy. He came to a lot of my basketball games. He’s been tracking my football career. He came to my playoff game last year. I did good that game.”

What other schools were you looking at before committing to OU?

"I was looking at LSU. But they had the No. 1 receiver last year (Rueben Randle) and he only caught 11 balls the whole season. I don’t know if he was overrated, but 11 passes, I need that in one game. I was also looking at Texas Tech, they have a spread offense. Ole Miss, as well. Ole Miss, they have some big-time receivers. I went on a visit there and liked it a lot. They had a great facility. But something about OU stood out.”

Are you completely committed to OU, or are you still considering other schools?

"I’m completely committed to OU. I still have people calling. But I don’t pick up.”

Who’s still calling you?

"LSU has been calling. Arkansas has been calling. Ole Miss used to, but they eventually stopped.”

What do you think of OU’s current receivers? Have you had the chance to get to know any of them?

"(Ryan) Broyles, I watched him play OSU.
