OU Insider: Sooners are choosy with scholarships

But sophomore Rhett Bomar is considered a roadblock by most prep stars. That was the early indication as the Sooners took a shot at some of the nation’s top quarterbacks and came up dry.

Californian Jimmy Clausen, rated No. 1 by Scout.com, chose Notre Dame. Arlington’s John Chiles went with Texas.

OU isn’t done checking out quarterbacks. One to watch is Gilmer, Texas, star G.J. Kinne, who has been offered by the Sooners as an athlete, but not yet as a quarterback. Kinne, who also plays safety, was named Mr. Texas Football and Class 3A Offensive Player of the year. He wants to play QB.

Running back is a different dilemma. There’s an allure in following Adrian Peterson, who is generally expected to leave for the NFL as a junior. But the season backup Allen Patrick produces, and the fact that OU just reloaded with three prep recruits at the position, led by five-star back DeMarco Murray, may dictate a wait-and-see approach.

The Sooners are in the game with two of the nation’s top defensive end prospects, Everson Griffen from Arizona and Richetti Jones from Dallas. They’d take them both.

Texas wide receivers Terrance Toliver and Ron Brooks would be hard to turn down.

Football’s national signing day hangs some eight months off, reserved for that first Wednesday in February.

But for Oklahoma, a signing-off day of sorts - the time the Sooners mold the complexion of their next class - figures to be hovering much sooner.
