Charles L. Spicer Jr. is poised to take another step up the ladder at OU Medical System.

Spicer has been selected as the next president and chief executive officer of one of the state's most comprehensive health care systems, OU Medical System announced Monday.

Spicer currently is CEO of The Children's Hospital at OU. He also has served as the hospital's chief operating officer.

Spicer will succeed Cole C. Eslyn, who is retiring at the end of the year after 35 years in the health care industry.

“Chuck has an outstanding record of success at The Children's Hospital, a much-deserved reputation as a respected leader, and a passion for our hospitals, patients and employees that is second to none,” said James C. Scoggin Jr., president of HCA Texas, which operates OU Medical System with University Hospitals Authority and Trust.

“These and many other attributes made him the hands down choice as the next president and CEO of OU Medical System. I am confident that Chuck will excel in his new role and continue and enhance the culture of excellence, education, caring, and innovation that defines OU Medical System.”

Under Spicer's leadership, The Children's Hospital set record admissions, ER visits and surgical volumes while patient satisfaction scores showed significant increases.

“On behalf of our board, I would like to congratulate Chuck Spicer on his new role as president and CEO of OU Medical System,” said Mike Samis, chairman of the University Hospitals Authority and Trust. “We look forward to working together with Chuck as we strive to maintain a shared mission, vision, values and goals.”
