Is this too early?
Sporting News doesn’t seem to think so, with Trevor Knight adorning the cover of its regional college football preview. The Sooners are the preseason No. 1 according to SN, with Oregon, defending champion Florida State, Alabama and Auburn rounding out the top five.
The only other Big 12 school in Sporting News’ top 10 appears to be Baylor. But is OU worthy of the No. 1 ranking in the season going into 2014?
Per the Tulsa World's Eric Bailey, Sporting News lead college football writer Matt Hayes explains why the Sooners were tabbed No. 1.
Hayes said quality on both lines of scrimmage as well as strong skill players and a schedule that includes big games at home gave OU the edge.
Oklahoma also has “a quarterback (Trevor Knight) who looks confident and ready to have a breakout season,” Hayes said. “Also, I think that Bama win gave the program a shot of swagger it lacked in the last few years.”
One would think FSU would be in the driver’s seat going into 2014, considering the Seminoles bring back Heisman Trophy winner (and newly-ordained crab leg stealer) Jameis Winston and a slew of skill position and offensive line talent. But the Sooners’ returning numbers on defense combined with the rise of Knight following his Sugar Bowl performance may be what has OU in the Sporting News’ top spot.
This statement isn’t meant to be mean, but let’s take the fan glasses off for a few seconds and ask the honest question:
Compared to the other teams in the Sporting News preseason top five, is OU the best pick for preseason No. 1?
