Missouri's running game isn't a major factor in the Tigers offense, merely a complement to their passing game. But one of the key stats in Saturday's upset was the Tigers outrushed the Sooners 178-110.
A telling sequence was Missouri was up by one possession when the Tigers had runs of 39, 19 and 15 yards to set up the Tigers insurance touchdown with 6:36 to play.
Missouri's DeVion Moore (73 yards) and Henry Josey (64 yards) both rushed for more yards than freshman Roy Finch (59 yards) who was OU's leading rusher.
FOURTH QUARTER TROUBLES CONTINUE
Oklahoma has been outscored 77-30 in the fourth quarter this season. But this time it proved to be the difference in the outcome. The Sooners regained the lead 21-20 late in the third quarter but the Tigers dominated the fourth quarter, 16-6, to hand OU its first loss.
Since a loss to USC in the 2004 national title game, the Sooners are 22-18 away from Norman in neutral site and road games.
Year: Road, Neutral, Total
2005: 1-2, 2-2, 3-4
2006: 4-1, 1-2, 5-3
2007: 2-2, 2-1, 4-3
2008: 5-0 1-2, 6-2
2009: 1-3, 1-2, 2-5
2010: 1-1, 1-0, 2-1
Totals: 14-9, 8-9, 22-18
When the Sooners clawed to within 36-27 with 6:06 to play OU coach Bob Stoops elected to go for a 2-point conversion which failed when Ryan Broyles nearly made a remarkable catch on a tipped pass before the ball hit the ground.
Most coaches would kick the extra point in that situation to keep it a one possession game. After the 2-point attempt failed, OU was forced to attempt an onsides kick which failed due to two Sooner penalties.
Oklahoma spent four timeouts, two in each half, because of alignment issues. It proved costly late in the game when OU, trailing by two possessions, had to use its final timeout with 5:18 left in the game.
OU's first timeout in the second half was used late in the third quarter when Missouri, facing a first-and-20, lined up four wide receivers on one side, one receiver on the other. The other timeout was used when OU had a first-and-goal at the Missouri 2-yard line.
SOONERS IN RARE CATCH-UP ROLE
For the first time all season the Sooners trailed after a quarter. OU's only deficit all season before Saturday's game was when Cincinnati led 3-0 in the early stages a month ago.
