OU notebook: OU to seek hardship for Reynolds

Published: October 14, 2008

Coach Bob Stoops said Monday OU will try to secure a medical hardship for Ryan Reynolds, which would give the junior middle linebacker an extra season of eligibility. “That’s something we will surely research,” Stoops said. “We’re going to try. What will happen, we’ll see.” Stoops said he expects Reynolds to attempt to return from a third major knee injury, which he suffered Saturday against Texas, tearing his ACL. Said Stoops, “I believe that’s what his intention is. I said to him, ‘What the heck else you going to do?’ He loves it. “Today, our guys are out there running sprints and he’s over there doing sit-ups. I picked him up off the ground and said, ‘What are you doing?’ He said, ‘Usually the guys who are injured do something else if they can’t run. I said, ‘We’re going to give you an exception for a couple of days.’ ”

THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION

Linebacker Lamont Robinson nearly made one of the biggest plays of the Texas game when he appeared to have intercepted a pass in the end zone. But officials ruled that Robinson didn’t make the pick, since the ball popped loose when he hit the ground. Stoops confirmed Monday that the correct call was made. Still, that hasn’t kept others from constantly asking Robinson if he indeed made the pick. “It’s been the million-dollar question. My teammates, everyone around campus, people in meetings, folks calling me up back home.”

MANGINO: SOONERS WILL BE READY

Kansas coach Mark Mangino knows OU well, from his time spent in Norman as a Sooner assistant, as well as relationships developed with Stoops, Venables and others on the coaching staff. Mangino figures he knows, too, how the Sooners will respond from the loss to Texas. “They’re not a program that’s based on emotion,” Mangino said Monday. “They are workmanlike. They come out and play well every week. You’re not going to see anything different from them. They have great pride.”

The ground can cause an incompletion though.

The ball was caught! The ground can not cause a fumble, especially when the replay showed
that he had control before he contacted the ground. Stoops is becoming a student of that
weak knee'd athletic director. You remember him, he's the same guy that said after the Oregon
game 2 years ago, "we aren't going to Washington if the game is officiated by PAC 10 officials.
Oh one more thing, The University President also said it. Would that be a Liberal stance?

Shepard, aside from Texas losing 2 games, there is only one other way OU could make it to the Big 12 Championship game. OSU needs to beat Texas, giving Texas one loss, and head into the bedlam game undefeated. OU needs to win the rest of their games. That would leave OU, OSU, and Texas all with one loss in conference. The tiebreaker is head-to-head record, which is a wash since each team was beaten by one of the other two. The second tiebreaker would be BCS ranking. Since OU's loss came earliest in the season, they would most likely be ranked the highest at that point. That is the only other reasonable possibility, even though it is highly unlikely.

Sorry to post so many but one other thing. He's still going to be contributing. You can bet your bottom dollar that he'll be kind of a "player coach" during his rehab, and if it doesn't work, I wouldn't be surprised to see him as an OU coach or grad assistant after his next try on the field.

Ryan's story sux.. Super Recruit, Martial Arts guy, Football smarts beyond anyone else on his defensive unit. It's just SAD. It's like Jason white plus a little more heartbreak. Jason's heart was so big that he tried to play in the NFL, but just couldnt handle it on the knees. I wish him the best of luck? I wonder if it's the way he plays, or if some people's ACLs are weakened genetically?

Ok folks. I admit I blew my prediction on the OU Texas game. And I am of the firm opionion that all those who jump off the OU bandwagon after that thrilling loss, are not worthy to be Sooner fans. The ones who already are not Sooner fans; well, I never valued your negative comments to begin with, but for Sooner fans to be whining about a loss to a good team in a really good close game is just "whiny".

So, on to the topic I'd like to discuss with everyone. What about the National Championship hopes? Check out these scenarios (yeah, they are what ifs, but it would be interesting to post about):

A. OU runs the rest of the table, Missouri loses 1 more game but beats Texas when they meet and then beats them again in the Big 12 game? Could OU get to the NC with 1 loss, if Missouri and Texas have 2 losses, even if the Sooners are not the big 12 champions? (this is the most interesting scenario)

B. I guess it would take 2 losses by Texas for OU to get to the big 12 game, along with some help from PSU and Bama.

C. Is there a scenario where OU could jump Texas in the South without Texas losing twice? (I'm thinking no, but hey, it's worth looking at).

Interesting stuff. Can't wait to see how it all turns out. OU, steady your ship and win out. Worst case scenario, holiday or cotton bowl are not too shabby either.

Why isn't Robinson getting a shot at the linebacker spot? With the interception (that wasn't), it looks like he know where to be on the football field. It seems he's always in on tackle (when they tackle) on kickoffs. He's been in the system for a while now.

Reynolds also missed two full seasons. In order to gain a medical redshirt you have to miss two seasons due to injury. I think Reynolds more than fits the bill. Jason White did and Reynolds will have missed more games than White by the time the season's over.

I think Reynolds, who I guarantee will be speaking with Jason White on numerous occasions throughout his rehad, will come back. If you listen to just the passion the coaches say he has and how much respect the players have for him and what a great leader he is, I don't think there's any way he doesn't come back. He's a competitor. He wants to play. Football is his life. He'll be back.

They aren't trying to get a medical redshirt, they're trying to get a medical hardship.

Even if they get one, my gut tells me he is done. If he makes it back I will cheer him on, but since Im sure he wont be reading this, I think this is the straw that broke the camels back. A guy I went to high school with was a great athelete. Tore an ACL playing basketball, tore the other the next year in football. Got a scholarship to play basketball at a Div. II school and had 2 more ACL injuries before he called it quits. Whats the point? One, you can come back from multiple ACL injuries but some people are just prone to tearing them. I tore mine in high school football too. it was 2 years before I was 100%, but now it is strong and I have stayed active. Sounds like Reynolds is more like my teammate and Jason White.

Good luck trying to get a medical redshirt on Reynolds. He played too many games before he got hurt.
