OU notebook: Coach Bob Stoops compares DeMarco Murray to Adrian Peterson

Running back DeMarco Murray has provided some memorable highlights at Owen Field. Against Tulsa, he scored after spinning twice and flipping over a defender into the end zone, reminding fans of the playmaking ability that’s been missing from the past two BCS bowl game losses, both played without the junior.

Last week, he did his best impression of a Mack Truck and sent Baylor’s All-Big 12 safety, Jordan Lake, flailing out of bounds to cap off a run on the right sideline.

"He’s always been a little more physical than I think people have ever looked at or given him credit for, and I’ve always felt that,” said coach Bob Stoops. "Everyone thinks of Adrian (Peterson) as being so quick and strong, well, he’s about the same size, so he’s pretty close.”

But more impressive for Stoops than the flashy highlights has been the Las Vegas native’s development into a complete player.

"He does the little things, too. Protecting, he’s good with his hands,” Stoops said. "He can do everything.”

ALL IS NOT LOST
Two losses have put Oklahoma on the outside looking in as far as the national championship picture goes. It’s an unfamiliar position for a program that has played in BCS bowls in six of the past seven seasons.

But Stoops says chasing another chance at a title, a result he wouldn’t rule out, isn’t necessary to keep his team’s attention.

"If we were sitting here undefeated, I wouldn’t go there, either,” he said. "What’s it matter? The bottom line is, you’ve got to play well Saturday and win. I don’t think we need that as motivation.”

SIT DOWN, STAND UP
Junior receiver Cameron Kenney had a breakout game against Miami, catching six passes for 72 yards and his first career touchdown.

But last week against Baylor, Kenney was benched for the second half after dropping several attempts.

"If you’ve got guys out there that can make the plays, they should be out there,” Kenney said. "Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make the plays I was supposed to.”

Kenney’s fellow receivers recorded 10 dropped passes against the Bears without their No. 1, Ryan Broyles, who could return against Texas after fracturing his shoulder blade against Miami.

CARTER PRACTICES
Safety Quinton Carter practiced Monday after missing time with an injured knee against Baylor. The only Sooner who did not practice on Monday was offensive lineman Brian Simmons, who will not play against Texas. Stoops declined comment on the severity of Simmons’ or Carter’s injuries. Stoops also would not say who would be starting in place of Simmons.

QUOTABLE
→"That’s probably like a World Cup right there. It’s gonna be crazy.”

— Former soccer player and junior college transfer receiver Cameron Kenney, on the atmosphere for his first OU-Texas game.

Jerry from Atlanta....some people pin their whole life's ambitions on bashing OU when they can. It makes up for the insecurities that they carry around with them every day. It makes them feel good, but only for a short while. It's like a drug to them. It's pretty pathetic when that rules their whole lives, but it's true.

I've seen DeMarco take on tacklers and not just falling down. I think he's almost back to his old self again. Problem is, every time he gets back to being good again, he gets injured. Hopefully, he has a few surprises for TX.

Brian. What color is the sky in your world? Leave D.M. on the bench? You have a LARGE hole in your marble bag my fine feathered fiend. Yeah fiend not friend. No friend of mine would say something so pathetic.

There is no comparison between DeMarco and Adrian. Adrian runs north and south while DeMarco spends most of his time running east and west! Adrain will run over people, where DeMarco will just "fall down" instead of taking the hit. Chris Brown on the other hand, he should get ALL of the snaps! Leave DeMarco on the sidelines Bob!

I know the economy is bad, some of your wives or girlfriends left you for a woman, your dog urinated in your favorite new pair of sneakers, and you're looking for somebody to kick around, but only a dimwit bashes Stoops, Wilson, Venables or any of our coaches. Give our coaches, our line and our receivers a break!
Just because your life sucks and you life life through football does not give you a right to bash the players and coaches when the going gets rough. If you can't support the team when we lose, don't call yourself a Sooner when we win.

Wilson is a great offensive coordinator. Does he make mistakes? I hope so, he's human. So do you!!!!

Good lord. Murray and Peterson? Only if you compare Switzer with Stoops. Coach Stoops: I went to OU 1974-1979 and graduated. I knew Switzer. You're no Switzer. And Murray is sure no Peterson.

Good lord.

What ever happened to the two studs they got out of TX? Calhoun and Johnson. They were rated the top two running backs in TX and neither one of them is making a splash.
Lloyd, Irving - Oct 13, 2009 at 6:50 pm
Personally I would like to see more of Jonathan Miller. The few times he has played he has been explosive. I think this kid is going to be a co-starter next year.
Craig, Bixby - Oct 13, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Murray was injured for a lot of games or he would have had pretty good numbers, but he is no Peterson. Now, DeMarco is more versatile because he can get involved in the passing game and return kicks, which is something Adrian is still not good at (the passing game).
Lloyd, Irving - Oct 13, 2009 at 5:29 pm
I honestly don't like to gripe about coaches. I have watched so much football though, I feel like I have the right to my opinion. I understand I have no Idea about the in and outs or the dynamic of this football team. I don't see them on a daily basis or I don't have an in depth understanding about the players. That said.

I feel like that you can really judge a coach by how the team does when the talent isn't up to par or there is a rash of injuries. I believe Coach Stoops when he has had his back against the wall he has done pretty well. But Kevin Wilson on the other hand seems to go into a shell. If I can predict every play he is going to run then surely the other team and players will be able to predict it. I just don't see innovation in play calling anymore. and I don't buy that crap about simplifying the offense because of injuries, the teams with less talent(because of injuries) have to try different things! Amazing talent can make a coach look brilliant even if he's pretty ordinary.

Still does not make feel confident about going down to Texas. The civility between McCoy and Bradford will end, once we take the field.
Boomer, Washington - Oct 13, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Comparing Murray to Peterson is like comparing Joe Washington to Joe Don Looney.
There is no substitute for speed and power in one package.

I liked the fact that they went with the big formation and tried to run right at Baylor. It didnt work all that well, but you still have to develope the attitude and it is best to work on it against Baylor than UT.

As far as Murray, he was in the slot a bunch when he was not in the backfield. He didnt come off the field a whole lot.

The next story down is "OU's Failures in the Red Zone". Give me a break. Was it 4 trips inside the Red Zone that ended with field goals? That will not be enough against Texas. The O-line better get it together quick. Can we recruit a fulback? The run game opens up the pass game that opens up the run game.

Its not so much the number of Murray's, or Brown's for that matter, carries that is causing problems. I have been watching OU for decades. Have you guys ever seen an offensive coordinator call 3-4 running plays in a row to the same back? ( Steve Owens doesn't count ). Under NO circumsyance should Brown ever do this. Its like the OC wants to bring a rb in, run him 3 straight times then send in the other rb to do the same thing. This is an offense? It ain't working. I'd rather see a drop on an intended pass downfield than see Brown get clogged up in the middle. Open it up, way up Wilson.

I know some of you guys don't want to hear this, but I think it may be time to put Adron Tennell back in the starting lineup. His crime this year has been dropping passes. Well, I've got news for you... they're all dropping passes. With Tennell, you at least have someone fast who can stretch the defense. Put he and Caleb and opposite sides of the field and Kenney in the slot.
And I agree with Rick. Murray should be on the field about 90 percent of the time. If he's not in the backfield, he should be in the slot. Right now, he's the only game-breaker they have.

That would be "hole" not "whole". Too early for me I guess.

Brown is a one-cut runner who is able to get to the whole fast. That isnt a bad thing, but if you have o-line problems it is hard for a guy like that to operate.

Murray is a guy that can create when the play breaks down, which it does often up front. Not to say he wouldnt be better with a better O-line, but his running style will give him more success. By the way, he carried 26 times and had some catches. He is getting his touches.

AD shared plenty of carries and he rarely played on third down. AD was not very good out of the shotgun. More of a north-south runner.

I don't think AP would be sharing carries with Brown. Love Murray and wished he was used more, but that is silly to put him in the same sentence as AP.
Grant, La Veta - Oct 13, 2009 at 8:50 am
Yeah, Brown doesn't seem to be running with the same explosiveness he has shown in the last two years. Murray has actually improved each season and he's really looking determined this year while laying the wood to some defenders.
Vince, Tuttle - Oct 13, 2009 at 7:36 am
Rick, you couldnt be more right on...
Shane, Springfield - Oct 13, 2009 at 6:52 am
Dear Coach Stoops. I suggest you introduce Murray to your offensive coordinator. From what I have seen of the SOoners this yaer Murray should be getting about 75% of the running plays. He is explosive. If what you NEED is a 1-yard run Brown is definitely your guy.
