Award-winning poet Honoree Fanonne Jeffers, an English professor and creative writing director at the University of Oklahoma, has been named the recipient of the Witter Bynner Fellowship, the Library of Congress announced Tuesday.
Jeffers was chosen by Natasha Trethewey, the Poet Laureate Consultant at the Library of Congress. Jake Adam York was named posthumously as a fellow.
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said in a statement, “These fellowships _ to poets whose distinctive talents and craftsmanship merit wider recognition _ provide a wonderful way for the Laureate, the Library and the (Witter Bynner) Foundation to encourage poets and poetry.”
Jeffers has authored three books of poems: “Red Clay Suite,” “Outlandish Blues” and “The Gospel of Barbeque.”
The $10,000 fellowship is named for early 20th Century poet Witter Bynner.
