Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford has been named the Big 12 Conference's male athlete of the year. As a redshirt sophomore in 2008, Bradford won the Heisman Trophy, given to the nation's best college football player, and the Davey O'Brien Trophy, awarded to the nation's best quarterback.

The Big 12 award is selected by a panel of media based solely on an athlete's performance in the 2008-09 season. This year, for the first time, fan voting on Big12Sports.com was included in the award's final tally.

Bradford led the nation with 50 touchdown passes, and chose to forego the NFL Draft and return to Oklahoma for his junior season.

Texas volleyball and track star Destinee Hooker was named Big 12 female athlete of the year.

While it may never happen again in basketball, I think they should have a bronze made for BG at the Lloyd Noble similiar to Heisman Park at the stadium. Congrats to SB.

Hey guys, I was just kinda joking around with my last comment. It was getting late and I wasn't really thinking. Can we just keep it amongst ourselves?

If all things are equal, you nominate the kid that comes back to school for another year. That was Sam. However, Blake may be the best student athlete EVER to attend OU. Regardless, '08-'09 was the second best year for Sooner athletics that did not include a NC in football or basketball ('87-'88).

Congrats to Sam. But, what about Blake Griffin?

If I wasn't married to my hot wife I'd probably date Sam... uh, is that gay?

Ever play that drinking game 'Hi Bob' while watching Bob Newhart? I bet you'd drink waaaaaaay more playing 'Sam Bradford' when reading the DOK.

Yeah, I love Sam but would have given award to Blake. He even forced Dick Vitale to call him the best player in basketball. Number one pick in the draft. Sam probably got more love because he turned down the NFL for one more year as a Sooner. I think that probably helped more than the Heisman. Either way it's a homeboy. Congrats!

You coudln't have gone wrong with either Bradford or Griffin. Bradford did win the Heisman, so maybe that's what put him at the top.

After going to the Big 12 website it appears that school can only nominate one male and one female for the award, but still I think I would have nominated Blake if I was Castiglione.
Bruce, League City - Jul 31, 2009 at 11:10 am
I don't know about that. I would have thought that Blake would have been a better choice. Blake was by leaps and bounds the best basketball player in the conference last year. While it is at least debatable if Sam was the best football player in the conference.
