Offensive organization: D

Nebraska confused OU's offense all night, with Landry Jones running around changing the play late in the clock, sometimes having to use a timeout.

NewsOK Related Articles

Tress Way: C

The lefty missed three field-goal attempts between 46 and 42 yards, but his five punts averaged 49 yards and generally kicked OU out of field-position trouble.

Run defense: B

Hard to knock a defense that gives up seven first downs, but Husker tailback Roy Helu was effective at times, with 138 yards on 20 carries.

Congeniality: A

That hospitality reputation is more than just talk. From the Husker hordes who lined up to get pre-game autographs from OU Heisman winners Jason White, Steve Owens and Billy Sims to the Nebraska fans who high-fived the Sooner players in pre-game warmups, Lincoln is a place like no other in college football.

Landry Jones: D

The rookie quarterback didn't always have time, but he threw five interceptions, including three in the fourth quarter.

Fourth-down decisions: A

OU was 0-for-3 on fourth down tries, but trying for the first down was the right play every time. The Sooners weren't making field goals, anyway.

Lets give Buffalo Bob an "F", he has earned it. Benching a kicker with 85% accuracy, Stephens,
for a 25% kicker. But thats not the only reason to Flunk him. The DO is afraid of him, but
we aren't. We don't play golf and hang around with him. We buy the tickets that help pay
his salary. It quit working for Stoops years ago, it just now caught up with him in a way
that he can't cover it up anymore. He only scored 3 points on the 68th rated team in the
country, in the Sagarin poll.

No doubt this is a bad year - too many below average Big XII level starters on offense and the offensive coaches don't seem to have the answers this year. It's just not working this year

ummmm.... Nebraska and their fans got the "A" for Congeniality. You know, as bad as the O-line and WR are this year, they are a few big plays from being a decent team. As it is, nobody makes the plays to win games and the Sooners are struggling.

The question must be asked; Is this the beginning of the end of the Stoops era at OU? Are we getting better? I thought we were until Nebraska. It appears the coaches have missed on the last several recruiting classes. Oh, there are great players in these classes but not in the numbers needed to win. Why are we starting three freshmen and two walk ons in the offensive line? We can't expect to win like that. How did we get such a dismal collection of receivers. Somehow in the grooming process no one noticed they are the weakest group of receivers in the Stoops era. We have to play a true freshman and a JC transfer out of desperation. Coaches up till now are blaming the players for lack of execution. Looks like the wheels are falling off. Even the O Coordinator admits that OU is known for winning the easy games. And with the poor recruiting classes don't look for help next year, when we lose some very good players. No wonder the vast majority of this years incoming freshmen class did not red shirt. We can only hope this and next years freshman class can come up incredibly big next year and pull this thing out. And as you have written, Bob has a poor record in close games and road games. Seems even with good talent his staff is getting out coached. So Berry, once again I ask: Are we seeing the beginning of the end of the Stoops era at OU?

I am really happy about us getting an A in congeniality
Jason, Oklahoma City - Nov 8, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Pure and simple; last night's debacle was the manifestation of the underlying issues all us "fairweather fans" have been noting for the past four or five seasons. Are we REALLY surprised they finally broke the surface? We shouldn't be. It's kinda like that awful skeleton in the family closet. You know it's only a while before everyone finds out, but you hope beyond hope it will just go away. Newsflash, this skeleton jumped right out of the damn closet and danced a jig on national TV!

atleast they win the Ms. Congeniality award.

Quit trying to play last year's offense with this year's players. Stoops, Wilson, and the rest of the offensive coaches need to start acting like problem solvers. They need to get creative. They need to overcome weaknesses instead of magnifying them.

This off-season may be the most important one in Stoops tenure. They need to address personnel problems on the field and philosophical problems among the coaches (namely, away game preparation, backup player quality, in-game adjustments and streaks of offensive predictability). These philosophical issues aren't new, but they've been spotlighted by the incredible number of injuries that have altered the whole season (Bradford, Gresham) and individual games (Broyles, Murray, Eldridge and others).

An elite team will suffer from circumstance and lose games... but 4 losses in the manner we have lost them goes beyond injury-based excuses. There are "head" problems at the top, and if OU is to improve, they must be addressed.
Grant, Edmond - Nov 8, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Last year the coaches were all geniuses because we had a great O-line and superior Skill position players, This year the coahces are idiots because the o-line can't get it together and we lost our two best players.
Boomer Sooner ! time for some Jermie Calhoun sooner-cat formations.
Barney, Mayberry - Nov 8, 2009 at 11:38 am
My bigest concern is the play calling. I understand that Jones had a bad day, but I don't see any adjustments at half time. You have to work with what you have. It is easy to work with a great offensive line, but when you don't have one, you have to be creative. Seems like we need a change!!!

Oh yeah, Berry Tramel gets an F for being too lenient on this awful team.
Titan, Winchester - Nov 8, 2009 at 10:47 am
Jerry, enough already dude. This team deserves every bit of criticism it's getting. This is the worst OU team any of us have seen since the mid-90's. Your persistence is making you look 10 times more foolish than any other poster on these articles. Time to add to the ignore list.

Wilson gets an F- and should earn his paycheck as a water boy. Patton gets an F- and should clean the locker room toilets for his paycheck. Laundry gets an F for the interceptions and poor performance. But hey its difficult for any QB to have success with overpaid Wilson and Patton running the show. OU line backers get a D for doing what the commentators said last night. "One weakness of OU's D is their linebackers for burying themselves." The O line gets an F for false starts and a personal foul call(again Wilson's fault for being too reluctant to make quick decisions). The D gets a B for not matching Nebraska's turn over performance.
Titan, Winchester - Nov 8, 2009 at 10:46 am
how did jimmy stevens lose his job and had only missed 2 fgs all year, yet tennell has dropped more passes than he's caught and he continues to see playing time. im conviced tennell has something on stoops, because that would be the only way to explain why this guy plays.
kevin, commerce - Nov 8, 2009 at 10:22 am
Fourth downs gets an A. Oh we tried for it, so we deserve an A just for trying. That is our society in a nutshell. This is little league where everyone gets a trophy. Berry, why even keep score. You ranking just went below Jenny Carlson, but you both get an A for trying.

This team has shown the inability to make improvements. Poor offensive line coaching by James Patton. That guy should be fired TODAY. But he and the rest of the staff that seems to have grown complacent will probably just get another raise and enjoy life sitting high on the hog. I mean Stoops hasn't fired one person in his tenure. ZERO in 11 years. Man I would love to have that type of job security even if I am doing a bad job. Or maybe it just allows the guys to do a piss poor coaching job and not have to worry. Hope all you coaches enjoyed the nice weather last week out on the golf course....sure as hell didnt look like you were getting the kids ready to play.

The same issues come up time after time: poor kicking game, red zone and short yardage failures, penalties, lack of adequate backups for injured players. Either the coaching staff is incapable of addressing these issues or OU has done a poor job of recruiting players with the ability to win in the Big 12. These things need to be laid at the feet of the man in charge, in my opinion he is being paid to much and delivering sub par performance time after time. OU has become the example of a team that loses so-called "big games," and apparently is now moving in the direction where losing any game is acceptable. I hope that those of you who believe this is a one year hiccup are right and I'm wrong, but I don't see anything to make me think this staff can stop the decline.
Randy, Muldrow - Nov 8, 2009 at 9:13 am
To the fairweather fans, you people need to get a life. That you obviously know nothing about football or supporting a team is obvious. You are unworthy to call yourself a Sooner. Stop pretending you support ths team. You jump on and off the wagon like a bunch of cockroaches, depending on if we are winning or losing. Between you and cockroaches, I'd rather had to put up with cockroaches. What moronic individuals you are!
Jerry, Atlanta - Nov 8, 2009 at 9:00 am
One more idea, Wilson. To bring up your grade and the QB's grade at the same time, how about some MULTI-LAYER ROUTES? What the HELL?!?!?!? Everything you call has guys on the same level. Not to hard to defend. All slants. Wow. Creative. Really? Come on, man. Make a defender CHOOSE which route to cover. Put pressure on them. Make them wrong whatever they choose. This is absurd.
Chris, Hesston - Nov 8, 2009 at 8:37 am
There have been impending signs of this disaster all season long but the $3 million bonus man has chosen to ignore them or he is incapable of changing them. A stubborn Ohio blockhead has brought our proud program to its knees. Let's face it, Sooner Nation. It's time to get the ole standby "FOR SALE" sign out and place it in Bobby's front yard. This is one of the low points in OU history, not to be able to score a touchdown. Shame, Shame, Shame!!!

This is how OU will lose the next 3 games. Pressure up the middle. All the other coaches have seen it. Someone go study Brett Favre, all you have to do is move the chains. Roll the pocket, set screens, shuffle pass, option, QB sneak, break your habits on the spread. Every coach has figure out OU's tendencies because of the amount of plays from last year. Wilson, you have to change your strategy.

First game without an offensive touchdown since '98. Outside of Murray, Brown, Broyles and Miller the entire offense gets the F. I was skeptical from the very beginning, but now I truly believe that Landry Jones isn't the one. Next.
