WR Manuel Johnson: A-

Johnson set a school record with 206 receiving yards. He also caught three touchdown passes, but cost his team a touchdown with a holding penalty that erased Jermaine Gresham's 66-yard touchdown reception on the third play of the game.

QB Sam Bradford: B+

A harsh grade, considering he threw for a career-high 411 yards (the third highest total at OU) and four touchdowns. But this was by far Bradford's worst completion percentage (55.9) of the season. Some throws were forced and he missed some open receivers.

OU Rush defense: A

TCU came in averaging 248.8 rushing yards a game and OU held the Horned Frogs to 102 yards. The Sooners jumped out to big lead and forced TCU to pass, which it does not do well.

OU Pass defense: C

As noted before, TCU doesn't pass well, so 212 passing yards are too many.

OU Rush offense: D

TCU entered as the nation's top defense against the run at 30.0 yards per game. OU averaged just 0.7 yards-per carry and the Sooners shouldn't average that against anybody. OU finished with 25 yards on 36 attempts.

FS Lendy Holmes: A+

Not only did Holmes recover two fumbles, he never quit on the Horned Frogs' first kickoff return when Aaron Brown broke loose and seemed destined for an 86-yard touchdown return. Holmes caught Brown from behind at the OU 11-yard line and TCU had to settle for a field goal.

Here are my grades for OU against TCU:

Manuel Johnson: Agree with the A- for the penalty. Penalties are something you have to coach out of the players and they need to be held responsible if they cost the team yardage and downs.

Sam: I give him an A. I think the author of the article needs to weight the scale in Sam's favor on this because basically, if you don't have the run game, and you have pressure each and every down, pulling out the kind of plays Sam had is no small feat. That's why OU won the game.

Defense was good: Overall B.

Rush Offense: F- We have to do ALOT better there. Even the coaches agree that although they were able to pull it out by going to the air (What you are supposed to do, by the way in that situation), you don't want another team dictating whether you can run the ball or not.

Special Teams D. What's up with our big name kickers hitting knuckle balls and missing extra points, and not getting the ball in the end zone on kickoffs. You'd think we could do better at OU.

Good Game Lendy Holmes, and Manuel Johnson for sure.

I think something needs to be said about Cooper OU's center, give him a game ball. When Johnson scored his last touchdown Cooper was outrunning the defenders down the field and was only about 4 yards from Johnson when he scored. Good job Cooper for not givng up on play that is over, you showed your speed. I was surprised

There is so much speculation one can make about the decisions mad eby coaches...and I will add one more. I wander if WIlson did call so many vanilla-ish run plays to prove a point to his o-line in that he wanted to see if they could deliver on a team determined to stuff the run. A someone just wrote ealrier about a quick pitches , I would also like to see how successful some counter plays could be. The year before last OU ran the counter pitch agaisnt Texas A&M in the first half and Allen Patrick torched them (gave up that play selection in the second half. I am sure there has to be some things the defenses do on a regular basis for that type of play to work. OU players just need to be determined to get better every week as our opponents surely will.

I normally don't read the comments here especially on an OU article because it so dominate by deaf, dumb and blind fans that see only what they want to see, but matt, moore needs to open his eyes. It's true that any team can have a bad game in one or two aspects of a game but the #1 teams, the national champion teams do dominate in all aspects against a team like TCU. Oklahoma is #1, but last Saturday Alabama DOMINATE a better team than TCU in all aspects of their game. I'm impressed with OU and they probably are the best team in the country and should play for the NC, but they need to knuckle down and work out their issues or they will make another appearance in a big game and travel home with their heads tucked under their tail.

How about another "F" for special teams? Worst since Stoops has been there. Kickoff coverage reminds me of John Blake teams. It's 4 games in to the season... specials teams still suck. Makes me think they will suck all season. Unfortunately, will most likely get them beat / keep them out of NC game.
james, Norman - Sep 29, 2008 at 11:12 am
I would like to see the run game include a couple quick pitches and those big line backers seal the line to get our athletes outside with some room to work. with the d-backs man to man our speed could do some serious damage. This would also open up the middle a little if the defense has something else to think about.

I'm with Cory, BRIAN JACKSON was all over his guy all night, making huge plays and should have been on this report card as A+++ good job brian, keep up the good work

I thought the offensive playcalling and performance was good and the Defense was solid. I do agree that the special teams need work and are easily our weakest link. Im not sweating the rushing yards too much. They were selling out to stop it, but we kept working it. We arent going to blow through everyone, so you people expect domination in every phase need to stick to Playstation cause it aint gonna happen.

Jeez people, did you not listen to what Coach Wilson said about all the running? He thought Sam was getting hit too often and they wanted the clock to run. Running the ball was the logical choice.

That was only game 4 folks. It was good for the O to be tested and they'll only learn from it. Not to mention we haven't revealed our playbook and won't next week either. I think things are going very well with this team and the coaches know what they're doing.

Inconsistent with criticism, says you can't grade an individual and then criticizes the grade of an individual. You don't get a perfect score if you don't play perfectly.

OU's offense is excellent-defense is good. Concerned special teams will lose a close game. Unlike the past, kickoff team is not loaded with starters. It may be time to get the studs out there. We sure don't want to march Stephenson out there to win a game on a 40+ yard field goal. By the way, if Tres Way was a better kicker - he would have been brought out of his red shirts weeks ago.

Instead of Lendy, I suggest Brian Jackson as the one deserved of the A+ grade. Brian Jackson has been the brightest spot on the secondary this season.

Agree with Jerry. You have the number one team and you're whining as if you expect them to beat every team by 50. It's not going to happen every time. Hate to break this to you but other teams have good players, coaches and fans that want to win just like OU. Be happy you got a convincing win over a really tough team and prepare for next week.

Rhode - are you nuts!!!!! Holmes has yet to cover a receiver when OU is a cover two defense. He is the weakest link. Goodbye!!!

Nice win over a ranked team, but come on. OU's special teams are horrendous. The offensive line was horribly inconsistent on Saturday (from giving up sacks to blocking poorly on runs), Kevin Wilson seemed to be channeling his inner Chuck Long (how else do you explain 36 running attempts against 8 and 9 in the box?), and the defense gave up more than 200 yards passing (often to wide-open receivers) to one of the poorest passing teams the Sooners will face this season. Best OU team of the decade? No. 1 team in the nation? Hardly. Lots and lots of work to do.

OU must work on special teams, the run game and pass defense and better protection for the quarterback. This was a good team we played. Had it been a tougher opponent the outcome could have been different. Let's try to improve in all those areas mentioned so that we can overcome tougher opponents this season.

Rush offense a D? Come on, TCU has the #1 rush defense, I would expect things here to be rough. I don't know about the D'Ok sometimes???

This is a good example of how spoiled the fans and media are. Pass Defense grade of C? TCU was 16 of 41 with 2 interceptions and we had several sacks. What do you expect. No team should ever complete a pass on us? The offense has the advantage on a passing play. If the qb makes a perfect pass they are gong to complete some of them. Give the TCU qb a little credit. He made some outstanding throws. Yes, we had some busted coverages but not many. I give the pass defense a B+.
