NORMAN — With the departure of defensive back starters Aaron Colvin and Gabe Lynn, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Mike Stoops put an emphasis on landing several defensive backs in the Sooners’ 2014 recruiting class.
On National Signing Day, after OU officially landed five, Stoops expressed how beneficial the added depth should be.
“We play with five DB’s every snap, so getting five was what we needed to do and certainly we look for some of those guys to contribute for us,” Stoops said. “We’re really thin right now. We were a couple guys short a year ago so it was good to get a good, solid class of DB’s.”
Jenks safety Steven Parker, a four-star recruit, is considered the top signee of the group and was referred to as “a player we desperately needed” by Stoops. Marcus Green, Vontre McQuinnie, Jordan Thomas, and Tito Windham were the other signees.
“When you look at those guys they have great versatility, size, range and that’s what we needed to do,” Stoops said. “I thought we got two pure cover guys in Jordan Thomas and Tito Windham. I thought Steven gives us the great cover guy, Vontre gives us a physical presence, and Marcus Green is a guy that I think can play all five positions.”
