Share “OU signee Blake Bell shrugged off...”

Blake Bell grew up in a family of defensive ends.

His dad, Mark, played defensive end for six years with the Seattle Seahawks. His uncle, Mike, was a defensive end for 12 years with the Kansas City Chiefs.

But deep down Blake Bell always knew he wanted to be a quarterback.

"I always watched Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger," he said. "I never really threw the ball much growing up, but I was always attracted to the quarterback position."

At 6-foot-6, 210 pounds, Bell sure looks like a defensive end.

But over the last two years — his first two years playing quarterback full time — he has developed into one of the top high school quarterbacks in the country.

Bell, who committed to Oklahoma 10 months ago, is rated the No. 3 QB nationally by ESPNU after accounting for 103 touchdowns passing and rushing while learning the position on the fly the last two seasons.

"I'm not too experienced at the quarterback position," he said. "For sure (QB) coach (Josh) Heupel is going to work with my mechanics. I think I have some raw talent, when stuff breaks down I can go out and make a play. But I have a lot of things I need to work on and a lot of areas where I can improve."
