The fourth-ranked Oklahoma softball team won its ninth outright Big 12 title Saturday with a 12-1 run-rule win over Iowa State in Ames, Iowa.
Sooners freshman Lauren Chamberlain was the star of the game as she broke the Big 12 single-season record for home runs with two of OU's three shots on the day. Chamberlain now has 25 home runs on the season.
The win moved Oklahoma to 44-8 overall and 18-5 in the Big 12 while Iowa State fell to 14-38 and 2-21.
Saturday's game was the 13th time this season OU has hit at least three home runs, as the Sooners upped their season home run total to 84, just one shy of the program record. The Sooners are undefeated in their 13 games with at least three home runs.
“It was an absolute mission and goal at the beginning of the year to win a Big 12 title,” OU coach Patty Gasso said in a news release. “We felt this Big 12 title would mean a lot with the Big 12 changing. To be a part of history is something we set as a goal at the start of the year. Lauren Chamberlain's record is just a testimony of her hard work and her contributions throughout the year. Today was a total team effort as everyone came through with clutch performances. To say that just one team won every series, and we were that one team, says a lot.”
