Truthfully, the Golden Hat trophy should be seen, not worn.

It’s easy to look happy wearing the Golden Hat.

What’s not easy is to look good.

Hat Facts

Here are some fun facts about The Golden Hat Trophy given to the winner of the Red River Rivalry:

* The trophy was first awarded in 1941.

* Initially, the trophy was bronze instead of gold and was known as The Bronze Hat. It became The Golden Hat when it was retooled in the 1970s and changed to gold.

* The State Fair of Texas donated the Golden Hat as a show of gratitude for playing the game at the Cotton Bowl.

* The trophy stays in the locker room of the winning team from the previous year until the final minutes of the game. Then, it is taken onto the field for the presentation ceremony.

* The trophy is already in Dallas and is on display at the State Fair of Texas.

Dan Blocker from Bonanza would have trouble looking good in the Golden Hat.

Former Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer turned 71 years old last Sunday and still looks cool, but "The King" would lose every ounce of cool if he dared to place the Golden Hat on his head.

The winner of the annual OU-Texas game in the Cotton Bowl gets three trophies:

1. The Governors’ Trophy, which I can honestly say I have never seen.

2. The Red River Rivalry Trophy, which I can honestly say I don’t care to see.

3. The Golden Hat, which is awarded on the field after the game.

To the victor go the spoils. Or in this case, three spoils.

The Red River Rivalry also has been a showcase for coaches’ hats on the sidelines.

Each coach has had his own distinctive look:

BUD WILKINSON (1949)
Talk about distinctive, it’s tough to find a classier appearance than Wilkinson wearing a tie and a fedora, no matter what the weather.
