NORMAN — A new era in Oklahoma women’s basketball will commence tonight, when the Sooners take on Rogers State in an exhibition opener.
Gone are Courtney and
Ashley Paris.
But that doesn’t mean the Sooners have lessened their expectations from last year’s Final Four season.
"Our goal is to win a national championship,” said sophomore shooting guard
Whitney Hand, who is expected to shoulder much of the scoring load left behind by the Paris sisters.
To have any chance of getting back to a Final Four, the Sooners will have to do it behind their guards instead of a pair of dominating post players.
Along with the sharp-shooting Hand, dynamic preseason
All-Big 12 point guard
Danielle Robinson is back along with last year’s Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year, wing
Nyeshia Stevenson.
That trio gives the Sooners reason to believe they have the pieces to make another run at a Final Four.
Even without the Paris sisters.
"I think our big thing is that we have the experience,” Robinson said. "We’ve been there, we know what it feels like, we know how hard it is and we’re willing to take the steps necessary to make it happen.”
