Three Oklahoma natives playing for the state’s FBS schools are on the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma’s Aaron Colvin (Owasso), Oklahoma State’s Daytawion Lowe (Carl Albert) and Tulsa’s Marco Nelson (Glenpool) are on the 48-player watch list for the award that honors college football’s top defensive back.
Colvin had 39 tackles and four interceptions a year ago at cornerback after moving over from strong safety. He’s been named to three watch lists this week, adding the Thorpe Award to the Bednarik Award and Nagurski Trophy watch lists.
Lowe had 75 tackles and two interceptions a year ago, tying for a team lead in tackles.
Eight Big 12 players are on the Thorpe watch list.
Nelson had 80 tackles and a pair of interceptions.
The Thorpe Award winner will be selected from three finalists and announced Dec. 12 on ESPN. The Jim Thorpe Award banquet will be held Feb. 4 in Oklahoma City.
Three Sooners have won the award–Derrick Strait (2003), Roy Williams (2001) and Rickey Dixon (1987). Oklahoma State and Tulsa have not had a Thorpe Award winner.
