OU's Mossis Madu just wants the ball

NORMAN — Mossis Madu does not mind where he plays for the Sooners, whether it’s running back, in the slot or at wideout.

He only has one requisite.

The ball.

"I like wherever I’m at,” Madu said, "as long as the ball is in my hands.

"My job is to just make plays for the team and help us win.”

Madu should have ample opportunity for that this season. At all three positions.

In an effort to get their best players on the field at once, Oklahoma’s coaches experimented with trying Madu — last season’s third-string running back — at slot receiver during the spring.

The experiment went so well, the Sooners have moved on to another experiment this preseason: playing Madu at wide receiver.

"We don’t want him to be pigeonholed,” receivers coach Jay Norvell said. "He’s improving tremendously, and the only way for him to improve is playing him there all the time.

"We want him to be able to play all over the field.”

The hope is that by the Sept. 5 opener against Brigham Young, OU will possess a versatile playmaker comfortable with lining up at three different positions. That kind of versatility should only enhance the Sooner offense’s ability to create mismatches out of the no-huddle, against which opposing defenses have only a couple of seconds to match up.

"It’s also getting your best guys on the field,” offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said. "Trying to get them touches.
