NORMAN — Before Oklahoma’s first spring practice, word leaked among the offensive linemen that they had been called out a couple hours earlier during their coach’s press conference.

"Those guys, at this point, whether it’s their work ethic or their attitude, need to improve,” Bob Stoops told reporters. "Those guys haven’t had the winter that everyone else has had. They, right now, are the weak link of the team, and we’ll see if they can respond and have the spring and summer to help us be a team that can contend for a championship.”

But members of the offensive line didn’t sulk when they heard about Stoops’ statement.

In fact, the consensus among the linemen after last Tuesday’s practice was that the criticism was fair.

And just maybe what this group needed as a springboard to gel this spring.

"The younger guys aren’t used to being counted on as much. I’m not used to being a leader,” said left tackle Trent Williams, the only returning starter from last year’s unit.

"The offensive line is one unit. If one guy is doing bad, the whole line is doing bad. We need to get everyone to work out at a high level every time."Senior guard Brian Simmons
