OU's Sam Bradford is living his dream
To some, the college game is more special than the NFL

NORMANSam Bradford decided that he had something money couldn’t buy. His dream.

"I dreamed about playing at Oklahoma since I was little,” the Sooner quarterback said Wednesday in announcing he would return for his junior season and forego the NFL Draft.

"No need to cut this experience short.”

Many are the reasons to go to the NFL. Many are the reasons to stick with the campus life. There was no right or wrong answer.

Slingin’ Sammy said so himself.

But it still was a little bit refreshing to hear someone romanticize the college days, and to know that teammates Gerald McCoy, Jermaine Gresham and Trent Williams all made the same decision.

Quite a switch from a year ago, when Malcolm Kelly, Curtis Lofton and Reggie Smith all jumped to the NFL, much to Bob Stoops’ chagrin.

"Sends a great message to other young people,” Stoops said.

Lose a load of early entry players one year, then a load the next, and suddenly your football program becomes an NFL farm team. Sammy B. and the boys stemmed that tide.

Stoops’ theory has been consistent for years. Almost every player should return.

He’ll get bigger, stronger, faster and more draftable. Thus, he’ll make more money and graduate, too, or come much closer.

Of course, that’s easy for a football coach making $3 million to say.

Stoops is mostly right, economically.

But these decisions aren’t always based on cash. Sometimes they’re made on where you’d rather be.

A whole lot of players have no use for the college part of college football. And if they’re tired of going to class and watching other people make money off them, who can blame them?

But if they still get a charge out of trotting down the ramp of the old alma mater, if they still want that diploma no matter what NFL riches await, well, that’s cool, too.

Stoops mentioned more than just draft status. He talked about legacy, and how a player who shuns NFL money early can leave a lasting name at his school.

I asked Bradford what he likes best about being at OU.

"All of it,” he said, though I don’t think he meant to include chatting with the media.

It’s a football state, Bradford said. A football state and a football school, and he grew up wanting to be a Sooner.

That dream has been reached in the most spectacular fashion.

Some day soon — heck, it could happen while he’s still wearing crimson — they’ll put up a statue of him across the street in Heisman Park.

Try putting a price tag on that.

Tom, bethany I agree with you, what king of gift did the Gaylord family promise Sam?
James, Memphis - Jan 16, 2009 at 7:39 pm
sean, oklahoma city, If Texas is like a Mexico, what the heck does that make Oklahoma? Other than the mobile home capital of the U.S.? Do you realize your state wasn't even admitted into the union until 1907!
James, Memphis - Jan 16, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Robert, Denver "Texas Tech beat UT" is in fact, three words and one acronym. idiot!

Enrique is jealous because Texas can't get to the Big 12 Championship or the National Championship as often as OU. What failure considering Texas top ranked recruiting classes. I think what he is pissed off about even more is that Bob can do it with left over talent Mack Brown rejects. Boomer Sooner!
Titan, Winchester - Jan 16, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Bradford and others have given OU fans a multi million dollar gift. They knew that leaving would decimate a team they loved and that was too much to take. Stay one more year and the team reloads in 10'. We wont have to rebuild in 09'. Thanks guys, for the gift.

Way to go Sam Bradford!! Dreams do come true. Pasadena, Jan 2010. Victory!
Jackson, albuquerque - Jan 15, 2009 at 12:36 pm
Geez Enrique...the fact that you posted on an OU page says much about your insecurity.
Robert, Norman - Jan 15, 2009 at 11:12 am
It should be interesting to see next year which is impacted most, the loss of the blOU O line or the UT D line. Will Bradford have enough protection to keep his uniform clean, or will he be picking himself up off the Cotton Bowl field? Better keep the EMT’s and back up ready… And remember, YOU CAN NOT SPELL “LOUSER” WITHOUT OU! 45-35
Enrique, Austin - Jan 15, 2009 at 10:37 am
Well, maybe I'm thinking about all the college players for one season. One percent of the college football seniors for all college teams, instead of the drafted ones. Forgive me, im old.
beryl, dallas - Jan 15, 2009 at 10:14 am
How many players in the draft actually make it in the NFL??? I hear it is less than one percent.
beryl, dallas - Jan 15, 2009 at 10:07 am
I know it is nit picking but if i hear/read one more news person report about someone in college getting a diploma I'm gonna lose it! For the love of all that is holy call it what it is... a degree. Diplomas are what you get in highschool. Degrees are what you get after completeing college course work. You've never heard someone ask "So you graduated from OU... whats your diploma in?"
Billy, Norman - Jan 15, 2009 at 9:23 am
You beat me to it, Steve....Lee may be right about the $$$$, but the college experience is never the same after age 21 or 22.....it IS refreshing to see someone so young be able to take that for what it's worth despite his ability to command millions now...

You can go back Lee, but the experience would not be the same. He would be an old fart like us.
Steve, Ketchum - Jan 15, 2009 at 7:10 am
Chatting with the media? Oh brother. :|

Selfish as we OU fans are, I'd have taken the 30MM; you can always go back and live the college experience...
