Grand Lake to host bass tournament
The Okie Division of the $8.8 million Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League will visit Grand Lake on Sept. 6-7 for its final regular-season event.

The two-day tournament will start with the full field competing Sept. 6 and continue with the top 20 percent of the field competing the next day. Winners will be determined by the heaviest two-day catch.

Anglers may register for the tournament online at FLWOutdoors.com or by calling (270) 252-1000.

Onsite registration is Sept. 5 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wal-Mart store in Grove. Entry fees are $300 for boaters and $150 for co-anglers.

•Lake record: A Pawhuska angler has set a new record for Kaw Lake.

Using a spinning reel and a jig, Spencer Grace caught a crappie weighing 2.1 pounds on July 31 that has been certified as the new lake record for Kaw Lake near Ponca City.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is establishing lake records on 13 state lakes this year as part of a new program.

•Hackberry fun: The Hackberry Flat Wildlife Management Area in Tillman County will have Family Fun Day on Sept. 13.

The public will get a chance to tour the new 4,600 square foot visitor center at Hackberry Flat, a wetland restoration area.

The festivities begin at 8 a.m. with a birding tour of the area. For more information, call the Hackberry Flat Center at (580) 335-7057.

•Sporting clays: The Oklahoma Quail Unlimited State Council is holding its first annual Sporting Clays Open on Sept. 19 at Quail Ridge Hunting and Sporting Clays near Tecumseh.

The event, a fund-raiser for Quail Unlimited, is open to all sportsmen ages 18 and older. Cost is $100 per shooter.

The shoot is limited to 150 shooters or 30-five person teams. All individual shooters will be teamed with other shooters.

•Fly-fishing workshop: A free fly-fishing workshop for beginners is scheduled for Sept. 6 at the Blanchard Library.

Tom Waits will teach adults and children the art of tying flies and discuss books, hooks, threads, tools and other materials for creating the lures used in fly-fishing.

•Honoring veterans: The Oklahoma Station Chapter of Safari Club International and Wild Game Outfitters have partnered to provide a hunting and fishing adventure for two Oklahoma combat veterans of the post-9/11 war on terrorism.

In January or February, two veterans will be given lodging and meals for three days of hunting and fishing near Porum.

They will each be given a guided hunt for a cow elk on the Duchess Creek Ranch, as well as guided fishing on Lake Eufaula. Virtually all expenses for the veterans and their companions will be paid.

The hunting and fishing adventures will be shown on the "Redneck Adventures” television show.
