Hefner Dam road re-opens
The Lake Hefner Dam Road will re-open today to pedestrians and motorists after six months of construction to make repairs.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned at 9 a.m. on the east end of the dam road.
The road — used by anglers, bicyclists, walkers, runners — had been closed while crews added large rocks and vegetation on the lake banks to prevent erosion.
The road also was re-paved and a new 42-inch cable guard rail was added to make it safer for people to walk, run, bike or fish, city officials said.
•New hunting and fishing area: An additional 3,270 acres in the Ouachita Mountains in Le Flore County near the Arkansas border will be open for public hunting and fishing in the near future.
At its monthly meeting Monday, the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission approved an agreement with the Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service to allow public hunting and fishing on the Cucumber Creek Nature Preserve.
The area will be walk-in only and be open in all statewide hunting seasons, but primarily will offer deer, turkey and squirrel hunting.
Cucumber Creek should provide some fishing opportunities, mainly for smallmouth bass. The new area will be open this fall, state wildlife officials said.
