Wakeboarding on the Oklahoma River
The third annual Oklahoma River Wakeboard Tournament begins today on the Oklahoma River.
Cost of admission is $5 per day. Tournament headquarters is the downtown airpark near SW 15 and Western.
Wakeboarding will start today at 1 p.m. and end at dark. On Saturday and Sunday, competition begins at 9 a.m. and ends at dark.
More than 100 wakeboarders are expected to compete in nine separate divisions from kids' to expert. About $1,000 worth of prizes will be awarded in each division, said Garrett Skeen, event promoter.
The total purse is $12,000 with the top prize of $1,500 given to the winner of the pro division. For more information, visit www.skiokc.com.
The Oklahoma River will be the site of a World Wakeboard Association event in September.
•Three Rivers fee to increase: Beginning Aug. 1, the cost of land use permits for the Three Rivers and Honobia Creek Wildlife Management Areas in McCurtain County will increase.
New regulations also go into effect on Three Rivers which will allow ATV use only during deer season and only by licensed deer hunters.
The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has a new land use agreement with Weyerhaeuser Company for Three Rivers,
Under the new three-year agreement signed in May, the state Wildlife Department will lease 250,190 acres at 50 cents per acre per year for recreational public access.
Oklahoma residents ages 18 to 63 are required to buy the annual Land Access Permit for $40. A three-day non-hunting and non-fishing permit will be available to Oklahoma residents for $10.
A non-resident permit will be $85 per year, with no exemptions. Permits bought before to the price increase will be valid through the end of the year.
•Duncan tackle show: The Duncan Fishing and Tackle Show will be Aug. 8-9 in the banquet room at the Stephens County Fairgrounds.
Admission is free. Anyone with fishing-related items that they wish to sell or have appraised should bring them, said Jerry Jolly, the show's promoter.
