Do you have any information about the quail population in Oklahoma and how they're doing. I know in previous years it seemed the quail were dwindling in numbers.

Quail are heading in the wrong direction. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation does roadside counts in August and October but I am not expecting a very good report. It may be time for the Wildlife Department to close quail season for a year or two. I know the biologists say closing the season will not help rebuild population because quail live such a short time anyway, but it couldn't hurt. I am hearing a lot of support for the idea from quail hunters. The Wildlife Department wants to allow hunters to hunt the few birds that are out there.

What do I need to do to participate in the free hunting days Sept. 1 & 2? And what am I allowed to hunt?

Just go. Dove and squirrel are in season. Dove is the big one, of course. You don't need a hunting license or HIP permit.

How has the heat affected the fish in Oklahoma? I worry about some of the fish in the shallower farm ponds.

Surprisingly, I haven't heard about many yet. It's time for them. I am sure there will be at ponds especially. Of course some ponds have dried up already. The Great Salt Plains Lake had a fish kill this summer but they always have them.

I've heard there is a new shooting club for women. Do you know anything about this?

Yes. A new shooting league just for women has formed at H&H. They plan to have regularly monthly matches. It's called the A Girl and A Gun club. It started in Texas and is expanding to other states. The contact in Oklahoma is Lisa Looper. You can email her at lisa@looperbrand.com
