Outlawing guns in schools made them vulnerable

Maryann Sonntag (Point of View, Feb. 2) missed the point that schools need armed personnel to deal with problems of defense between the time that 911 is called and the police arrive. Starting in 1990 and 1995, federal laws outlawed possession of defensive firearms on school property by licensed concealed-carry owners, off-duty police officers and non-firearms licensed guards. When schools became gun-free zones, mass murders occurred because criminals and mad men knew no one could stop them because their victims weren't protected by high-magazine guns as good or better than their own.
