AFTON — A Tulsa businessman purchased Grand Lake’s historic resort for an undisclosed sum, resort officials said Thursday.

Eddie Gibbs, founder and CEO of Ameristar Fence Products, bought the Peninsula Resort and Club-Grand Lake, formerly Shangri-La Resort, according to a statement released by the resort.

Immediate construction plans include a 6,000-square-foot, two-story clubhouse to accompany the resort’s two 18-hole golf courses, which have a 4 1/2 -star rating from Golf Digest magazine.

The new clubhouse will house a pro shop, meeting rooms and a restaurant and bar, among other amenities.

Shangri-La, a luxury resort near Grove was known for its golf courses in the 1970s and 1980s before hard economic times produced multiple ownership changes and bankruptcies.

Peter J. Boylan III bought the former Shangri-La Resort in 2005 and has spearheaded construction of the new resort where Shangri-La Resort once stood.
