INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Pacers have traded point guard Darren Collison and wing player Dahntay Jones to the Dallas Mavericks for center Ian Mahinmi.
Dallas, which was unable to sway Deron Williams to play for his hometown team and is losing guards Jason Kidd and Jason Terry in free agency, confirmed the deal Thursday night.
"We are thrilled to add these two players to our roster," said Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations. "Darren is a young, explosive point guard with tremendous upside. He has proven that he can lead a playoff team and we are excited about his potential. Dahntay is a rugged veteran who will play the kind of tough defense that will fit perfectly in coach (Rick) Carlisle's system."
Also on Thursday, the Pacers signed free agent Gerald Green. Terms were not disclosed.
Green is a five-year veteran who has played for five teams. He finished last season with the New Jersey Nets, where he averaged 12.9 points and 3.5 rebounds. For his career, he has averaged 8.3 points and 2.2 rebounds.
The Mavericks waived Brendan Haywood and designated the 7-foot center as their amnesty player.
With the move, Dallas is taking advantage of the one-time provision in the new CBA allowing the departure of Haywood without his remaining contract counting against the team's salary cap or luxury tax. Haywood is set to make $8.3 million next season and is due $27 million over the final three guaranteed years in his deal.
Though the Mavericks haven't announced it, they are also adding 7-foot center Chris Kaman, who announced his deal on his Twitter account Wednesday.
Collison lost his starting job to George Hill late last season after starting 135 games for the Pacers in two seasons. He averaged 13.2 points and 5.1 assists two years ago and 10.4 points and 4.8 assists last season.
Jones, a defensive stopper, joined the Pacers for 2009-10 and started 31 games in three years. He averaged 5.3 points in 16.2 minutes per game last season.
