Painted logos help bring attention to historic route
MIAMI, OK — Driving in downtown Miami, it's hard to miss the new logos painted directly on the blacktop, reminding travelers that they are driving on Route 66.

Amanda Davis with the Convention and Visitors Bureau said the idea to paint the streets with the logo was a solution to a repeated problem travelers seem to have when taking a road trip through Oklahoma.

"It seems that sometimes people have a hard time finding it,” she said. "So we put that down just to be sure they know they are still on 66,” she said.

As the longest stretch of Main Street on the historic route, Davis said Miami takes pride in promoting the route, and she said the high summer gas prices haven't seemed to hurt Route 66 traffic. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

"We've seen a lot of Oklahoma people this summer,” she said. But even more surprising than local folks looking for shorter road trip destinations or increased motorcycle traffic, Davis said there has been a huge boom in international tourism.

"I don't know if it's because the euro is so much stronger than the dollar right now or what, but our international visits are close to double what they were last year.”
