ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Costas Mendrinos scored in the 49th minute to give Panionios a 1-0 away victory over newcomer Veria in the Greek league Saturday.
Panionios climbed to the top of the standings with two wins in as many games. Defending champion Olympiakos, which hosts Levadiakos Sunday, will have a chance to catch up.
In Xanthi, the local team beat financially troubled AEK Athens 1-0 to inflict a second straight defeat to start the season on the former Athens powerhouse. Forward Marko Markowski scored the winner with a diving header in the 57th off a cross by Benjamin Onwuachi. Earlier, in the 12th, AEK's Panayiotis Lagos saw his free kick hit the post.
In Saturday's other game, newcomer Platanias beat visiting Panthrakikos 2-0.
