Park service closing tunnel along Meadow River

GLEN JEAN, W.Va. (AP) — The National Park Service says a tunnel along the Meadow River isn't safe and will be closed.

The Carnifex Tunnel is part of a rail grade along the river that's used primarily by local hunters. It also has been used by National Park Service staff for emergency access to the river.

The park service said Monday that an inspection last fall found that the tunnel's ceiling is crumbling.

Park service staff considered knocking down loose concrete from the ceiling as a short-term fix. But the park service says rain and freeze-and-thaw cycles would continue to damage the ceiling due to drainage problems and structure fractures.

The park service says longer-term repairs would be cost-prohibitive.

Closure of the tunnel will be completed by the end of the month.
