PURCELL — Many of the tenants at Purcell Park Apartments never saw Jamie Rose Bolin, the cherub-faced girl who rode her bicycle around the complex. But they've all heard what happened to her. Kevin Ray Underwood, 28, was convicted Friday of murdering her. He had confessed to luring the 10-year-old into his apartment one afternoon in April 2006 and killing her as part of a cannibalistic plot. The girl's mutilated body was found inside a plastic tub in Underwood's bedroom closet. Tenants in the apartment complex say there's an eerie feeling about living in a place with such a gruesome past. And nearly everyone who lived there at the time of the killing has moved out, one renter said. All the units, including Underwood's former apartment and the one where Jamie lived, are rented, a manager said. Patty Farley said she felt a little uncomfortable moving to the complex in January because of the history. A new family rents the upstairs apartment where Jamie lived. Jeremy Stafford and Mindy Rankin said they don't like the apartment's notoriety. "If I had known she lived here, I wouldn't have moved to this apartment,” Stafford said. "It's one of those things you can't get out of your head.” The couple, who have a newborn daughter, said people at the apartments rarely talk about the killing. "It's a horrible thing that happened,” said Jason Shea, Stafford's friend. Shea and Stafford, who previously lived in another unit in the complex, remember seeing Jamie around. But they said they never crossed paths with Underwood. Neighbor Cassie Scott said she can't believe something like that happened in Purcell, with just under 6,000 people. "It's a little strange because it's Purcell. You don't hear about this stuff,” she said. No one answered the door Friday at the apartment where Underwood had lived. Sabrina Maizland, a manager, said the owners are probably more careful now about who they rent to. Even so, Underwood had no criminal history and would have passed a background check.
