Patriot Cup golf notebook: Scott Verplank grinding away

Turning 50 the day before the U.S. Senior Open begins at Oak Tree National, Scott Verplank is trying to get his game in shape before making his Champions Tour debut July 10-13 on his home course.

Weeden will assume a backup role behind Tony Romo.

“I get to learn from a great player (Romo) who has been in the league more than 10 years,” Weeden said. “(Quarterbacks coach) Wade Wilson played in the league 19 years and has been in the league ever since. Coach (Jason) Garrett also was a quarterback. It’s a great opportunity.”

EVENT CUT SHORT

The Patriot Cup was called off early when lightning and heavy rains moved through Owasso shortly after noon.

In addition to safety issues, several PGA and Champions Tour members needed to return to Tulsa to fly out to play in this week’s pro tournaments.

“We were concerned for the safety of all the spectators and players,” said Patriot Cup head professional J.R. Glover. “We’re disappointed, but everyone got a taste of it and watched golf for nearly three hours.

“The No. 1 thing of this tournament is to showcase Folds of Honor to remind people of what this day is about and all the great things that have been done because of Major Dan (Rooney’s) vision and his dedication to such a great cause.”
