What: Luncheon of Champions: Oklahoma City Beautiful 31st Annual Distinguished Service Awards Luncheon.

Venue: Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.

Attendance: 400 guests.

Honorary chairmen: Steve Owens, Billy Sims and Jason White.

Event chairman: Mary Blankenship Pointer.

Committee: Janie Comstock, Elizabeth Richardson, John Robberson, Carla Sharpe, Ellen Spiropoulos and Toby Walker. Lisa B. Synar is executive drector. The Jemar Poteat Trio provided background music.

Program: A rainy day for the luncheon put smiles on the faces of every want-a-be gardener in the room. Eric Wynn, board president, greeted the guests. Brian Davis, Thunder play-by-play broadcaster, made the awards to Matthew Weaver, Caroline McKinnis, Eric Wynn, SandRidge Energy (presented by Teresa Rose, received by Scott Griffin,) Herman and LaDonna Meinders and the Myriad Gardens Foundation (presented by Councilman David Greenwell, received by Herman Meinders and Maureen Heffernan), John Belt and Joy Reed Belt, received by Joy Reed Belt, Surrey Hills Home & Garden Club received by Nancy Atha, Chesapeake Energy Holiday Lights Display received by Teresa Rose, Bill Long, Susan Bergen and Devon Energy Corporation, received by Klay Kimker.

Of interest: Chesapeake Energy Holiday Light Display runs through eight city blocks and consists of 61,000 strands of light.

Fun to know: Volunteer Spirit Award winner Bill Long put on a black and white Santa suit, dubbing it his “Arbor Claus Suit.” Sims auctioned off an art painting depicting White, Sims and Owens. The painting raised around $600. Midway through the bidding a guest at the end of the room raised his hand and asked “what are we bidding on?’’
