What: A reception was given for Misty Copeland, an American Ballet Theatre soloist. Copeland was here to teach a master class for aspiring ballet dancers at the Oklahoma City Ballet School’s Summer Intensive. She also had a signing for her memoir “Life In Motion.” Copeland began her ballet studies at the age of 13. She won first place in the Music Center Spotlight Awards at 15. She went on to join American Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de ballet in 2001 and was appointed a Soloist in 2007. She is ABT’s first African-American soloist in two decades. An advocate for opening doors for more girls, no matter their age or background, to discover ballet, she inspired Project Plie, ABT’s national program focused on increasing ethnic diversity in ballet dancers and actively supporting interested kids who might not have access to training. As a founding charter member of the program. OCB provides members of The Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma County with a chance to be mentored and taught on scholarship.
