A FINE TRIBUTE
Event: An Evening Honoring Dr. Edna McDuffie Manning.
What: A celebration of Dr. Manning's retirement after more than 24 years of service, as well as a benefit for the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics Faculty Endowment.
Where: OSSM campus.
Planners: Event chairmen included Dan Little, Jerry Burger, Sue Ann Hyde and Geoffrey Simpson. SEIZING THE OPPORTUNITY
Event: Pros for Africa — Pop Tab Purse Project Unveiling.
Where: Devon Boathouse.
What: Sister Rosemary Nyirumbe, a Catholic nun, taught her students at St. Monica's Tailoring School in Gulu, Uganda, how to crochet accessories such as purses and belts out of aluminum pop tabs sent from Oklahoma. Around 200 of these items were sold recently at this special benefit evening. Oklahoman Rachelle Whitten and her husband, Reggie, helped make the purse project a reality by co-founding Pros for Africa.
FINER THINGS OF LIFE
Event: Antique Glass Club Visitors Luncheon.
Where: Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club.
Program: Scott and daughter Cathi Shuford of the Dallas Auction Gallery, presented a slide show program.
Chairman: Susan Robertson was program chairman.
Buzz: This annual luncheon is always a treat. Members decorate individual tables with heirloom silver, crystal and china and embellish with imaginative floral centerpieces and antique containers.
What: Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum Eighth Annual Reflections of Hope Award Luncheon.
Where: National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.
Honored: The museum's Reflection of Hope Award was bestowed posthumously on Anthony Shadid, two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist. Shadid, age 43, died on assignment in Syria.
Event: TEEM'S (Education and Employment Ministry) 25th anniversary celebration, “Creating Our Destination.''
Where: First United Methodist Church of Oklahoma City.
What: A celebration of TEEM's 25 years with a mission of empowering people and changing lives.
What: CASA Charity Golf Tournament Awards Presentation.
Where: Quail Creek Golf & Country Club.
To Benefit: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) of Oklahoma County volunteers, who are trained to advocate for the best interests of an abused or neglected child in the courtroom.
Program: Janet Barresi, state schools superintendent, was the master of ceremonies and Kelly Davis was the guest speaker.
