The Spanish actress, 37, sat down with the rest of the cast at a press conference Thursday to discuss the series' latest installment Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Playing the daughter of a magic-wielding pirate (not to mention the former flame of Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow), Cruz spends a lot of the movie getting into heated sword fights. Though looking beautiful and battle-ready is enough of a tall order, the actress added an extra level of difficulty to the mix: she was pregnant with her first child during the film’s production.
"We had a lot of preparation before shooting started…we did a lot of choreography together," Cruz said.

"But it was always safe, because of my situation then, they were really protective and that meant so much to me." She added that the choreography she did for Nine helped. Though she was punching rather than plieing, she was used to the complex training needed to make fight scenes look fluid and entertaining.
Cruz gave credit to the film’s other stars -- the jaw-dropping settings -- for shaping the character of Angelica, a former nun-in-training who turns to a criminal life on the seas after being romanced by Sparrow at her convent.
"[The locations] helped me a lot to imagine what the pirate world at that time was because it's so far from our reality," Cruz added. "To create a character like that is all about imagination. It really helped to be in those beautiful places."
