MIAMI (AP) — For South Florida art patrons, the wait is finally over.

No, it's not just Art Basel. The $131 million Perez Art Museum Miami finally opened Tuesday with a members-only gala preview of the stunning bay-front museum's vibrant contemporary collection.

Guests perused sculptures, paintings and installations inside. Then they strode down the wide stairs that double as auditorium seats and out to the museum's massive wrap-around balcony for cocktails.

There — even as cranes continued to drag in trees to be planted on the yet to be landscaped grounds below — visitors dined on ceviche and watched the cruise ships across the water.

Above them, giant columns draped in shrubbery dangled like trees in an abstract enchanted forest. Museum admission is $8 but is free every second Saturday and first Thursday of each month.
