Pet Tales: Mitzi will ride again in Wewoka parade

Heather Warlick: The annual Sorghum Day Parade in Wewoka is Saturday and, as they have for the past five years, Jim Mitchell and his mini schnauzer Mitzi will ride in the parade together.

Jim Mitchell and his beloved miniature schnauzer, Mitzi, have been riding on Mitchell's bicycle together in Wewoka's annual Sorghum Day Parade for the past five years, though Mitchell says this year may be their last.

I sincerely hope not because I've grown attached to the pair having corresponded with Mitchell throughout the years.

“I'm 88. Mitzi is 12. I may go or she may go before next year,” Mitchell said, though surely his active lifestyle, riding his bicycle for exercise and enjoying the companionship of his friend Mitzi keeps Mitchell in better health than some at his age.

This year's parade is Saturday and, as she does each year, Mitzi will ride on a little platform Mitchell fashioned for her and attached to his bicycle.

In 2009 and again in 2011, I wrote about Mitchell and Mitzi for Pet Tales columns. Over the years, Mitchell said Mitzi's eyesight has been deteriorating due to cataracts. The veterinarian said the surgery to fix the cataracts would cost $4,000 and advised Mitchell against spending the money. He already spends $100 per month on insulin shots and prescription dog food to treat Mitzi's diabetes.

“But she is worth it,” he said. The parade attracts more than 25,000 people to Wewoka and every year, kids and adults alike delight in the sight of Mitzi and Mitchell riding along, partners for life.
