— Peter Markes, Edmond North High School orchestra director, is the 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year for Edmond Public Schools.

The announcement was made Tuesday during the Edmond Public Schools Foundation's annual Celebration of Excellence at Santa Fe High School.

Markes leads an award-winning orchestra and is considered an innovative teacher, visionary leader and consummate professional, district officials said.

“We look for who best exemplifies the teaching profession,” said Ruth Zumwalt, chairman of the Professional Development Committee, which makes the selection. “He best represented us.”

Markes has taught in the district for 10 years.

“First, peers select a number of teachers for the amount of work and effort they put into teaching and their relationship with their students,” Zumwalt said of the teacher of the year selection process.

A teacher of the year is selected for each school campus.

The Professional Development Committee, which consists of teachers, parents and administrators, reviews each of those nominations.

“Next, they submit videos of themselves teaching, and from there we pick five finalists,” Zumwalt said. “Those finalists are scored on a rubric for their portfolio and an interview with 10 of our committee members.”

The campus teachers of the year also were honored Tuesday.

Markes was traveling home from Russia on Wednesday and was unavailable for comment.
