Just in time for his latest big-budget motion picture, Peter Parker is back in the pages of “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
A brand-new “Amazing Spider-Man” No. 1 goes on sale Wednesday, the day before preview screenings of the new film are scheduled to hit theaters.
In 2012, Dr. Otto Octavius, aka the villainous Doctor Octopus, switched bodies with Peter Parker, leaving Peter to die in Doctor Octopus’ body. This led to “The Superior Spider-Man” comic-book series, in which Octavius attempted to prove he could be a “superior” Spider-Man to Peter Parker. That series drew to a close with issue No. 31.
Parker returns as Spidey in “Amazing Spider-Man” No. 1, which according to a news release from Marvel, had preorders of more than 500,000 copies, which would make it the highest preordered comic in the last decade, according to Diamond Comic Distributors.
Dan Slott will continue chronicling the adventures of Spider-Man.
“I’ve been a Spider-Man fan since I was 8 years old. Of course I want to see Peter back! He is the one, true Spider-Man,” Slott said in a release from Marvel. Slott is joined by artist Humberto Ramos for the series.
Retailer Brian “Buck” Berlin, of New World Comics, 6219 N Meridian Ave., said he anticipates a sales uptick from “Superior Spider-Man.”
“We sold more ‘Superior’ than most of the Marvel titles,” Berlin said. “And with Peter coming back ... we’re expecting a pretty big increase.”
Justin Allen, with Second Chance Books and Comics, 3909 N MacArthur Blvd. in Warr Acres, agreed that anticipation was high for Peter Parker’s return.
“I’m pretty excited about it, personally,” Allen said. “I know that a lot of our customers ... are ready for Peter to be back now. I think there’s quite a bit of excitement.”
The first issue of the new “Amazing Spider-Man” will feature Electro. Electro is also the villain of the latest “Amazing Spider-Man” film, where he will be played by Jamie Foxx. Andrew Garfield returns in the second film as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
