FOSTER YOUTH STOLEN IDENTITIES
This photo taken on Friday, April 22, 2011, shows Dominic McGee, 21, responding to questions during an interview in Denver. The United Way recently did a credit report for him and they found out that someone took out a mortgage in his name in 2005 and that there are several unpaid utility bills in his name. He has been in foster care since he was born because his biological mother had drug problems. Foster children are shuffled from home to home with their personal information passing through different hands, setting up what advocates warn is a recipe for identity theft. A new Colorado law taking effect this summer seeks to address the problem by offering counseling and legal services to help clean up the credit records of young adults who wind up with mortgages and cars in their names without their knowledge.
